I have a 2001 Ford Exp. I first was having it die on start up . Took it to dealer and they said probably was the Idle Air control valve, had that replaced to the tune of $$$$. They also checked the EGR and said it was fine. Now a week later I try to start it up and it will crank and crank and crank no start. Than I depress gas pedal and do it all over again a few more times and it will start.
Will do it cold or hot, sometimes will start right up, other times not.
Has 86,000 miles on her, and always kept up with maintenence on time.
Welsome shandell! I would have diagnosed your problem as an IAC too. I'm kind of a fan of dealer service. How about you take it back to them and kindly tell them they didn't fix it right the first time.
They likely said "probably" because they couldn't duplicate the problem. This is a common occurance at the dealership and theres no way they could guarantee as that being the problem, but from experience it IS the most likely. If it's doing it more likely now try and get them to look at when it is acting up.
Thanks for your reply. Did go back to dealer and told them what is happening since they replaced the IAC and they said "oh it cannot be that it has to be your fuel pump." This did not go this bad until they did the IAC and considering I have already paid them $$$$$ just less than 50 miles ago now they want $$ more to diagnoise again. Do I just go directly to manager or what?
I think they did not put it in right.
Any ideas on this I am running out of money with them and patience.
I don't believe it is possible to incorrectly install the IAC, if it is then it would act up all the time, not intermittently like it did before. The fuel pump is possible but is not a common problem on those trucks. I can't really tell you what to do, you can either take the risk and have them replace it, and it might still not be the problem, or pay them to spend a bit more time diagnosing when it is acting up, to know for sure. A simple fuel pressure test can tell a lot. I would recommend you have them do a bit more diagnosing though, just because of the infrequency of fuel pump failure on those vehicles.
Well now the dealership is stumped. All yesterday they could not get it to start , towed it in to the bay put it on the monitors, found nothing, than today without doing anything to it it has started right up repeatedly. All fuel lines and pump are fine, they checked the vacuum hoses, injectors?, everything. So now they asked me to please leave it there cause they have called in the Quality Control guy to now go over it. Of course I am leaving it there, It does not work one minute and than it does. Plus they said if they ever get this issue again they will know what to check if all elses fails.
So I am still without her.
Oh yea they also checked the Map or something that starts with an M.
And remember last week they replaced the IAC, thinking that at first.
It's pretty hard for a shop to just knock off ALL the labor. They could very well do an adjustment and reduce the price to help out, but if everytime a vehicle was hard to diagnose and the flat rate technician is spending extra time to figure it out and you want to pay him nothing? Put yourself in their shoes. Customers are pretty ignorant about that kind of thing and it bothers me since I had to see a lot of it. FYI warranty pays like half of the regular flat rate and technicians regularly lose their shirt on difficult warranty repairs.
hello f100rustbucket, considering I have already paid them almost 500.00 to fix the IAC last week cause that is what they "guessed" it was after they could not find the problem the first time, they are not charging me anything to diagnose it this whole week. I have not as yet got to the point of what they will charge me when they find the issue. So far as of today nothing is coming up yet it is still playing it's games and starting up fine and running and than later on not starting at all, or starting and immediatly dying.
I know they are not miracle workers but one would think by so many days they would have an idea by now. I am getting very discouraged.
