hey guys,
I own a 1995 Bronco with a 302. I just transplanted the motor into the truck. it was a junkyard motor with a 114,000 miles on it. First the drain plug was leaking so I changed it. Now it looks as though the rear main is leaking. It didn't look like it was leaking before I put it in. The junkyard could've cleaned it off though. I don't want to pull the motor to change the seal. Should i try some stop leak stuff to see if it slows it down. The truck has 190,000 actual miles on it and is not exactly a jewel. It is my rusted DD/off-roader. What would you guys recommend for stop leak. I run Valvoline 10w-30 year round in it. Would Valvoline Maxlife help too? I put it in my brothers 99 escort ZX2 with 230,000 mile son it and it runs like a top. his car gets 10w-40. I live in Minnesota and all of my driving is highway miles if that helps. Any help would be great guys.
My Bronco would drip a few drops overnight, but not enough to pull the trans. and replace the rear main seal. I started using Valvoline Max Life 10x 30 oil it stopped my leak.
Thanks for the advice buddy. I will try that. The seal could just be a little brittle and that stuff is supposed to help that. I will try it on my next oil change.
There is whats called a "rope gasket" that is specifcially for replacing rear main seals without pulling th engine. These are not perfect in terms of completely stopping a leak...they will drip a very tiny bit, but, you drop the pan, loosen all the crank mains, remove the old seal, then the rope gasket has a very thin wire atteched to the end that allows you to slip the wire over the top of the crank and then feed the gasket in. Excees is cut and then tighten everything don....you're done.
