Personally, I think ford talks alot of smack, I don't see them being as bad off as they claim. They out sold chevy and toyota in 06, they sell like crazy overseas. All thier companies are in the black, mazda, volvo, land rover and astin martin, the exception is jag, witch can and should be fixed. The roads around here are covered with new fords, from rangers to super duty's, every other car is a fusion or focus. The new sport trac is catching on, I'm starting to see alot of them now, there still alot of explorers showing up and escapes, there's a blue million on the roads. I think most of thier problems are mismanagement, Bill Ford and Nasser weren't the greatest businessmen appearently. Ford motor company is a legend and the companies they own are all great in thier own way. If they can't make it work, when you own some of the greatest nameplates in the world, then it was time for a change at the top. I think the new guy will make a difference, I read where he is revisting why the taurus was killed, he wonders why you let the best selling car die a slow death like they did and I agree, why did they ? MISMANAGEMENT!!! and they would of done it to the ranger, but it doesn't appear he's going to let that happen.
I have to agree on the mismanagement problems within Ford, or any large company or corp. Over inflated egos, salary's, perks, etc, etc. with no end in sight! Seems that the sky's the limit!
As for Ford's woes, I've been seeing many more Fusions and 500's out and about here in south ILL. Maybe they're going to make a turn around!?! I do not see where they're as bland looking as many claim they are.
As for Jag's woes, I for one like that new Jaguar C-XF concept, she's super slick lookin! I just hope it turns out to be as good mechanically as it looks. There's a pic of it on the cover of this weeks AutoWeek.
Why did Ford hang the 500 name on this new car? Why not use the Taurus name. While the car had problems early, they were solved by the early 90's. Then after 1995, Ford just seemed to let the car die as slow death.
I had read the Ford wanted to call the car a Futura, a name Ford had first used in 1954-55, on the Lincoln Futura dream car (which George Barris morphed into the original Batmobile). After the Fairmont Futura ended production at the close of model year 1983, Ford must not have renewed the name, because Pep Boys now uses it on a line of tires.
And it was Pep Boys who refused Ford permission to reuse the name on what has become the 500.

I've been wondering for a while now why the "500" badge is dumped on so much and yet we don't even hear so much as a negative peep about Chrysler's "300" name plate.
Reminds me of a conversation I had with another auto enthusiast. He and I were discussing how a vehicle like the Honda Element, that hideous-looking box on wheels, could sell in the US. We both ended up agreeing that, had Ford introduced the same exact vehicle, the automobile world would have had a field day, poking and bashing Ford without mercy. The "Ford Element" would have gone down in history as the worse flop since the Edsel, and at this critical point in time, it would probably have sunk the company.
Perceptions. Think about it.
