well last night i changed the carburator to a performer 600 checked the compression, it was more consistent through all the cylinders, and then checked the spark plugs and wires. I then started it up and set the timing, it seems to like 8 degrees a little better ran the engine and the red glow on the headers was gone. so i started to wonder what jetting and setting the carb, I had took off. I then pulled the bowls offf teh demon and found the carb was set way to lean for any engine it had 64 primaries and 67 secondaries, Then carb also had a lot of garbage in it dirt, gum and mositure at the bottum of the bowl so i cleaned and recaliberated it back to stock settings, after getting the settings from the internet. hopefully it fixed the carburator, now the engine seems to run smooth and no popping annd the lifter seem to have quieted down after running it for another hour or so and just have a exhaust leak from the headers in a couple of spots but quiets down after it gets warm.... thanks you guys for all the help, now i will learn to check settings and calibration on anyting i buy used now on..
When the headers pipes were glowing hot,
was the engine temperature hot?
Take a good look at the engine oil, the engine running hot could of stressed the engine oil, might check it out, and maybe consider changine the engine oil if necessary.
Moisture, dirt, gum, crude, at the base of fuel bowls in carburator would lead me to believe, that the gas tanks also have crude and dirt.
Or was the carburator taking from another vehicle prior to installation on your engine?
Does you engine currently have a fuel filter?
I would visually inspect the fuel filter and inspect for flow restriction and inspect the fuel system.
