i was out in the snow today, and about every 2 minutes my driver side tire would pop out of 4x4 and it felt like i hit a huge pot hole. i turned around and make it back home so i'm hoping it's just a bad hub but was wondering what my problem could be and if any one has any input on what i should do? i have a 1980 f-150 ranger explorer. thanks
did those trucks get auto hubs? did you have to get out and manually lock your hubs in? if not, then you need to go ahead and upgrade your hubs to some milemarkers or warns. thats the only thing i can think of.
auto hubs are terrible about locking and unlocking while driving, however if you have manual hubs there is definitely something wrong in there assuming you completely locked the front in
Sounds like you have something hanging up between the lock and unlock position. You might try taking your hubs apart, cleaning them and putting them back together. The actual lockout assembly comes apart pretty easy, all you need is a pair of snap ring pliers... remove the big snap ring and they come right apart. Careful taking them apart there is pretty stout spring inside there and they will fly apart if you aren't careful. If everything is froze up you might be better off throwing a new set of hubs in there. Warn standards run around $60-$70 a set Warn Premiums around $100.
I am a little confused, ( easy to do lately ) the only way to determine if one front wheel is not working properly, is if the front end has a locker. If does not, then one wheel will spin, or the other. If a hub goes away, then neither of the front wheels will spin at all. Usually if a failing hub disengages, and then re-engages while under power,,,,,Kaboom. She no likey that way.
Am I missing something here?
Does your truck have a locker up front?
just pull the front hubs apart, clean really well, apply a SMALL amount of grease to the moving parts and reassemble. this usually works. let me reiterate, apply a SMALL amount of grease to moving parts. otherwise the grease will make the hub parts stick and then you are right back where you started
