Considering the selling price of 4x4 2000 Rangers with 100,000+ miles, if it were me it would be a very poor financial decision to throw that much money into it. Within an hour drive I can find at least a dozen competent rebuilders who'll rebuild the engine for $2500 or less with a 36K warranty.

A crate engine is a brand new engine from the manufacturer. The price is probably right for retail from a dealer and should be installed for that price. Depending on the age of the vehicle and how long you plan to keep it a low milage used engine might be better. A rebuild would be second if you can trust the rebuild shop. There are many ways to cheapen a rebuild. There are, however a number of reliable national rebuilders and and a good local shop can make the installation in one day for an additional charge. The price will include a core charge for the used engine and may depend on the degree of damage to your engine. If the block is usable it would be one thing otherwise it may be worthless and you would need to pay the core charge which should be nominal.
