some smoke at startup

I drive an ’01 with the 4.6L. Truck has 96K miles and no real problems, runs great.
My condo parking spot is on a pretty good incline and when I go to start her up after about a day , I get some smoke on startup. It definitely is oil smoke, can tell from the smell.

It has been doing this for just the last month.. Last fall, I was out of town for 3 months, and the truck sat parked, though a friend did drive it occasionally.
<O
I use the Motorcraft semi-synthetic oil and change about every 7,000 miles. Before that I used Mobil1 full synthetic until it got so damn expensive. I think oil consumption is maybe half quart between changes, hardly noticeable.

Looking for expertise or opinions here. I would guess the incline and sitting for time may have contributed to this? What part or seal in the engine would be causing the startup smoke, and is this something for concern or not really? Thanks.

Mine too does that occasionally at cold start up, and I've got no other oil consumption problems. Only a small blow of blue smoke, then nothing. I would suspect is the oil ring is a little worn or just sticking a little until the engine warms up, letting a small amount of oil residue to remain on the cylinder and burn. After a few RPM, it seats and all is good. I'd leave well enough alone unless the oil consumption increases or the engine smokes under acceleration or continuously, meaning the rings are worn.

It's the valve stem seals. Very common, and not a big issue until consumption becomes excessive.

Last night I had to floor it real quick to pass some idiot and noticed some smoke in the rearview. This was about a mile after I left home with a cold engine. I am hoping to drive her another 2 years or to about 140K miles. Do I need to worry about this fouling the plugs prematurely? I think I replaced them at 75K. 96K miles now. Thanks for the reply.

Is 7000 miles on an oil change a bit excessive for syntec blend?

Dealer and factory book says every 7,500 miles. I know this goes into a whole other topic, the forum on oils, but what do you guys do?

I would just keep an eye on it. If it isn't really black in color after 5 - 6000 miles then why change it? It's all a comfort level preference. Some may feel better chanaging every 3-4000 miles and some go longer.

Personally I change every 5000 km with a synthetic blend 5w-30 and my oil is a dark brown color everytime I change it. I don't like to see dark black oil on the dipstick.

To each their own!

i have an 01 expedition with 110,000.i noticed a higher than normal idle at starup normal was 1500-1700rpm and it was reving 2000-2200,blue smoke at startup, and excessive oil consumption all happening in a two month period.thought the motor was starting to go.searched these forums for solutions to these problems and found the pcv valve appeared as a possible problem for all.disconnected the battery to reset computer changed the pcv and presto all the problems are gone!!!!!!! hope this can help you. i can't say enough good things about this website!!!!!!!

Was the smoke blue or black? I imagine, being that the engine was cold, stomping on it probably gave it more gas than the engine could burn and some of the unburnt fuel came out the tailpipe. That would have been a black/dirty gray smoke. Burning oil would be a blueish smoke.

It's a mass-airflow type control system. There's no extra fuel that'd be unburned when you "give it gas". The PCM knows coolant temp, throttle position and airflow into the engine. It determines the necessary amount of fuel based on this data, and injects this amount of fuel to ensure proper air fuel ratio.
