engine diagnosis
Hey guys im trying to figure out why my 69 bronco is acting up while on the road. Its a 302, 3 speed on the floor. Problem is only when im driving on the fwy in 3rd gear it kind of feels like its puttering out when i get on it. I can keep the truck about 60 mph and if i try to go any faster it feels like it chokes out for a sec. while it backfires. Any ideas would help.

Only does it at highway speed? What is the condition of the basic tune up parts? Ignition timing correct? What carb does it have? Does it have points or electronic ignition? Does it backfire through carb or out of the exhaust? After it backfires, does it pick up and go like it is supposed to?

I would definitely look at the distributor very closely- check the advance, possible weak springs or the vacume assembly needs replacing. Also check the rotor, sometimes the fit onto the rotor shaft appears ok but it is not, causing the rotor to slightly rotate at certant constant speeds.

Install a fuel pressure gauge then road test
again. You positive the fuel pump is keeping up?
Fuel filters clogged up and can't flow at high fuel demands?
Cruising at 60 your mechanic should be all in,
getting on it hard your vacuum shouldn't be the problem.
