Changing gearing

I have a 2001 f-250 with the 5.4. I am running the 315 series bfg tires with 3" of lift. Im wanting to get more pulling power from it. How hard would it be to install a set of 4;10 gears front and rear. It is a 4x4. With the 315 tires it really bogs pulling my enclosed trailer. Thanks.

It's not exactly a do-it-yourself job for the average wrench. You need some special tools, and tolerances are pretty tight. Definately best to have a good shop do the work.

You can buy a good ring & pinion set from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Just Google them and they have everything you need.

IMHO...if you are wanting to go from 3.73s to the 4.10s...that is a waist of time and more importantly $$$money. With the size tires you have...it would be wise to go with the 4.30s at a minimum.

Unless you are real familiar with changing gears, then I recommend a pro shop do the install.

As Pocket mentioned...Randy's Ring and Pinion is a fantastic source! I have used them in the past...and they provided me an excellent 3rd member for my FORD 9" rear axle.

Good luck...

I'll second that 4:10's will be a waste of money go with 4:30 at a minimum or 4:56 for some more low end torque...also unless you have done gears before find a good shop and have them installed... problably about 1500 bucks for gears and install

If you are going to swap out the gears, I agree with biz4two and would go with the 4.30's. This is something you will only want to do once because it is going to cost around $1700-$1800 professionally installed. If you are going to spend that kind of money, make sure you get the performance you are looking for and that the new gears will do the job you need them to do.

I went to 4.30's from 3.73's and have absolutely no complaints. It helps bring out the power of the V10.

Thanks for all the help. It looks like the 4;30's it will be. It is alot of money to spend on the truck if its not going to do what I want. The other alternative was to go back to a 265 series tire but I dont want to do that. Thanks.

Try this out and then go one gear size numerically higher and you'll be quite happy.

The reason I say go one higher is the math doesn't take into account the extra rotation weight of the tires or the increased drag and surface area either.

I was running 36's with 4.56's and should have definitely gone with 4.88's to put the truck right in the sweet spot.

Those 315's are almost 35, more likely 34 1/4 - 34 1/2. The math comes out to 4.14's, which dont't exist. The closest would be 4.10, but remember to go one higher.

You want to get that 5.4 to run around 2250 - 2500 RPM's at highway speed. That is right where the TQ curve flattens out and will keep you from downshifting on small hills. Each step in gear size will get you around 200 - 250 RPM's higher, so you can use that as a guide.

Don't worry about RPM's too much, you've got nearly 6K to work with. The computer cuts your fuel out well below that.

You will be verry dissapointed just going from 3.73 to 4.10. I would swap to a 4.56.

we do gear swaps every day and i have to agree with the other dudes here. you will need the 4:30's at least.if it were mine with a 5.4 and those tiresi would do 4:56's .
Now as to cost the guys here are again very close to what we have to charge for both ends.

Gearing

I have another questions. I am trying to decide different cost options. What would run better in your opinion. My truck with the 315 tires with installing a 4:56 gear or just buying a set of 265 tires and wheels and just swapping them out when im pulling the enclosed trailer. That was my other option. The problem is I have the speedo calipbrated for the 315's now. That would be a pain. Thanks.

You'd probably be happiest with the gear change.
