Question Oil Pressure Problem.... I Need Help!!!

HEY GUYS, HAVEN'T BEEN ON HERE SINCE JULY, WHEN I HAD TO REPLACE MY HEADGASKETS AND EGR COOLER ON MY 6.0L 4X4 XLT FX4(ABOUT 185000KMS).
GOT A PROBLEM WITH OIL PRESSURE ETC: WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, IT CRANKS A LONG TIME BEFORE STARTS. ONCE WARMS UP AND TEMP GAUGE STARTS TO MOVE, THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE GUAGE DROPS RIGHT OFF AND "CHECK GAUGES" LITE COMES ON. IT ALSO HAS A STRANGE "WHINING/GROWLING NOISE, ESPECIALLY ON ACCELERATION OR HIGHER RPMS. MY 6.0L IS CHIPPED WITH THE SUPERCHIPS TUNER ON "ECONOMY" MODE, AND I RUN 5W40 SYNTHETIC OIL, AND MAGNAFLOW EXHAUST. THIS PROBLEM SUDDENLY HAPPENED ONE DAY ON A HARD ACCELERATION, THEN I HEARD THE FUNNY WHINING NOISE(SOUNDS LIKE A NOISY POWER STEERING PUMP).
I DID A MASTER OIL PRESSURE TEST AND ONLY HAVE ABOUT 6 - 8PSI AT IDLE AND ABOUT 40 AT 2200RPMS. I REPLACED THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR AND ALSO REPLACED THE INJECTION PRESSURE REGULATOR(A SUGGESTION BY MY FORD DEALERSHIP PARTS SUPPLIER SHOP FOREMAN)AT A COST OF $700.00 MY COST.
I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AFTER TRYING A FEW EXTERNAL IDEAS, AND DECIDED I NEEDED TO KNOW IF THE HIGH OIL PRESSURE SIDE WAS POSSIBLY LEAKING. THE DEALER PRESSURIZED THE HIGH SIDE ETC AND SAID THERE WAS NO LEAKS. THEY THEN PROCEDED TO PULL APART THE OIL PUMP AND SAID IT WAS SCORED BADLY, THAT SOMETHING HAD GONE THROUGH THE PUMP AND IT NEEDED REPLACED. SINCE I'M A LICENSED MASTER AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN AND OWN MY OWN LARGE REPAIR SHOP, I PAID THEM $650.00 DIAGNOSTICS BILL(WITH DISCOUNT) AND TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY SHOP.
I SPENT THE 10 HOURS LABOUR MYSELF AND REPLACED THE TIMINGCOVER ***'Y, WITH OIL PUMP(AT ANOTHER COST TO ME OF $780.00 - MY COST) AND REASSEMBLED IT AND STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK THE PUMP APART, IT NEVER LOOKED TOO BAD TO ME, AS IT LOOKED LIKE AN OILPUMP WITH 185000KMS ON IT(NORMAL WEAR). I AM CONVINCED THE PROBLEM IS ON THE LOW PRESSURE SIDE OF THE ENGINE, POSSIBLY A PLUGGED OIL PICK-UP, OR FAULTY OIL FILTER BYPASS CHECKVALVE(IN FILTER BASEPLATE ADAPTOR HOUSING), OR ONE OF THE LOW SIDE GASKETS, OR SEALS FAULTY.
ENGINE STILL HAS "NO/OR" LOW OIL PRESSURE AT IDLE(JUST OFF IDLE THE GUAGE GOES WAY UP INTO THE NORMAL, LIKE NORMAL) AND HAS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH NOW. STILL LONG CRANKING COLD STARTS, AND HAS THE FUNNY WHINING NOISE. OTHERWISE I REMOVED THE CHIP AND STILL HAVE THE EGR DISCONNECTED, BUT ALL SEEMS NORMAL OTHER THAN THESE PROBLEMS.
ANY IDEAS FROM YOU DIESEL BURNERS OUT THERE??? THE FORD DEALER WILL BE TAKING THE TRUCK BACK IN ON FRIDAY TO RE-DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM(HOPEFULLY AT NO CHARGE) AS THEIR INITIAL DIAGNOSTIC($650.00) WAS WRONG.
NEED HELP, IDEAS, WHATEVER. SORRY TO VENT FOR SO LONG, BUT NEED IDEAS, OR HELP IF ANYONE HAS EVER EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE.

How about backing that caps lock key down to a low roar?

Don't have any ideas, but I do have the 6.0l shop manual in PDF format if you'd like it. Also I'd check the tech folder.......that might be a good place to start (I believe the manual is available for download there, also). Also, contact vloney, he's a Ford diesel tech, and a good guy, and discuss it with him. He might have some ideas.

White f350---It does sound like a low oil pressure pump concern (sometimes known as base oil pressure) Check the regulator just to the passenger side of the harmonic balancer. You need an allen wrench to remove the 1" plug there. Behind it will be a spring and a piston. The piston has to ride smoothly in the bore. If not, use crocus cloth(very fine) and smooth out any burrs on the piston and the bore, then clean very well. You have to have sufficient base oil pressure before your high pressure oil pump can operate efficiently.

what year is your truck. 6-8 psi is ok by ford specs but i have seen 40 psi at idle. it could be a bad hpop. the best way to check for base pressure is to remove your oil filter, and depress the little black check valve to the right of the standpipe and get somone to spin the truck over for you. if you see flow, you are good.

Cool

Hy guys, this sounds alot like the problem that I just went through, with the ball brg plug on the high pressure pump fell out. starts fine if you start it within a 20 sec's after shut down but if it sits for 2min's had starting. low base oil pressure and not enough high pressure to run engine over 60 mph.(1400 psi) was the max. sounds alot like a broken record to me.....Dan.

Post re: no oil pressure

Hi guys, and thanks for all the input so far and sorry about the caps lock on lastnites posting . We have it on at the shop all the time.
You all have to remember: I just put a new low pressure oil pump(and timing cover ***'y that comes with new oil pressure regulator) into the truck on Friday. The truck actually runs awesome, lots of power(even without my superchip in it, at present), oil pressure only 6 - 8psi(minimum spec at idle is 12psi, I believe) and oil lite comes on when engine warmed up at idle(its okay just off-idle), cranks long time on cold starts, starts normally if only shut off for up to 15 minutes or so, weird p/s whining type noise on acceleration or just revving the engine. The Ford dealer did all the testing on the high side oil pressure system and said there was no leak on the high side pressure.
GOFAST66: thanks for the reply. when you had this problem happen, did the truck have normal power, and did it make a funny whining noise(sounded like the p/s pump was noisy &/or low on fluid??)????
BOWTIEHTR(like the name -- most of my buds have bowtie diesels): my truck is an '04, and according to Mitchell on line, oil pressure should be minimum 12psi, I believe.
VLONEY: a new pressure regulator came with the timing cover/oil pump kit. Had the same problem before I put the kit in.
GUNNER15A: I'm gonna cruise through the 155 pages of tech info now, and see if I can get any ideas.
Thanks all for the answers, and maybe you can fire some more ideas at me, PLEASE........... I gotta get this fixed..

sorry, no funny noises and no on the power, as the high pressure pump would only develop 1400 psi. If you drove it normal it would be fine up to around 55 or 6o mph then it would fall short on power.

Just went back through 20 pages of threads and ran across your story... interesting, and I have been toying with the idea of pulling the turbo off and pulling the hpop and checking the seals from the low side. I feel for ya man, but glad to see you're up and running again. My Ford dealer here, has me booked in again on Friday, but if I can fix it without him, I'll get my money back from them for their misdiagnostics.
Whereabouts on the hpop is this checkvalve?? and can it be purchased seperately or do I need a hpop?? I have suspected the hpop, because of the whining noise(sounds like a power steering pump, when its low on fluid), and suspected it was sucking air, and giving that funny sound. Where did your checkball go?? I don't think I'd leave a 3/8" checkball floating around in that particular engine???
Please give me a little feedback, because it sure sounds familiar, and I've had this problem about 1 month now.

It's not a check valve, but a plug to block off a drilled passage on the side of the pump. I talked to a rep from IH and he directed me to look at the three oil passages on the back of the block that are blocked off by little soft plugs pressed in. two are oil gallerys for the lifters, that are located under the cam gear and the only way to get to them are removeing the tranny. Then the third is located just under the HPOP.If you remove the HPOP you can see all three with a mirror and flashlight, but I don't think that you could replace the two under the cam gear without removing the tranny, but at least you can see them.when I seen that mine were there and in place I looked at the HPOP and found the blockoff ball brg was missing from the pump. replaced the pump and fixed that problem. now.. still having problem with only getting 2500 psi out of my HPOP.just recieved my tools for testing the high pressure oil sys and havn't had time to trouble shoot it yet.BowTieHtr is been a great help for me so listen to him for great advice and you can't go wrong.

HI BOWTIEHATR: I BELIEVE THE ICP SENSOR IS ON THE RIGHT FRONT VALVE COVER, AND I KNOW THE DEALER SAYS THEY USED SHOP AIR AND DEADHEADED THE SYSTEM AND THE HIGH SIDE HAD NO LEAKS. THE DEALERSHIP IS VERY LARGE, WITH ABOUT 40 - 50 BAYS AND ABOUT 30 TECHS AND I THINK 7 DIESEL TECHS. THEY ARE BOOKED 3 WEEKS IN ADVANCE AT ANY TIME. JUST A NOTE ABOUT THIS..... IT IS PRESENTLY -30*C UP HERE RIGHT NOW(COLD SNAP) AND I HAD THE TRUCK PLUGGED IN LAST NITE AND TRIED THE REMOTE START AND IT FIRED ON THE 2ND TRY FROM THE REMOTE START(I ACTUALLY DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD). MY SHOP IS TOO BUSY TO PULL IT IN RIGHT NOW AND CHECK OUT THE CHECKVALVE(BEARING) THAT GOFAST66 HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT, BUT, DOES THAT EVER SOUND SIMILAR. THE FAINT "WHINING" NOISE IS MAKING ME BELIEVE THE HPOP IS SUCKING SOME AIR, BUT I CAN'T PINPOINT THE NOISE(MOST AUDIBLE FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING) --- SURE SOUNDS LIKE A LOW POWER STEERING SYSTEM AND A NOISY PUMP.
SORRY ALL, I DID IT AGAIN WITH THE CAPS LOCK.... I HAD TO START A NEW NAME TOO, BECAUSE I'M AT THE SHOP TODAY AND I THINK I'M STILL LOGGED ON AT HOME.

I had a simular problem on my 04 350. I had recently changed the oil in it and was driving home from work and the oil pressure gauge droped to zero and the check gauges came on while the truck was at idle or when it was coasting to a stop. As soon as I would hit the gas the oil pressure would come up again. I remembered that I screwed the oil filter housing cap on a little tight so I loosend the housing cap a little and gave a few taps on the housing and it immediately fixed the problem. I just thought I smushed the filter element down to far or had some air trapped in there. Give that a try.

What oil filter did you use? Some "will fit" filters are a little shorter than oem and allow the valve in the filter housing to remain open a little draining oil out at idle. It will fill back up at higher engine speeds. If you used an aftermarket, you might try an oem filter.

Lightbulb re: oil filter

Hi Vloney: I had a Napa oil filter in it, and just this morning finally brought the truck into my shop and I thought I would try a Ford oil filter.... same thing. Good oil pressure until the engine temp guage starts to move, then gauge drops and "check gauges" lite comes on. I'm going to take the filter housing and adaptor off right away, and check seals and if all okay then take the turbo etc off and look at the hpop like gofast66 suggested and check the plugs and "ball bearing". Will let you all know soon, thanks again.
