I was wondering about which will be better for my truck. 06 F150 screw 6.5 be 2wd. I just had 20's put on and they look great. I have done a search which raised a couple ?'s. I have the 70 series on my 03 Expy which sounds great but there is a slight drone at cruising speed (65 to 75 mph). I live with it. Will I get the some drone on this truck? Will either series produce a drone? The Expy has a 5.4 as does this one. I also read that depending on what tip is used it can play a role in the noise. I think the sound will be great with whatever I use. I don't have a CAI just the basic OEM. So what will be better, the 50 or the 70? I like Flowmaster sound so lets go with them for now. Thanks for help. Bluefire
I have a 50 series and there is no drone, I also have a K&N CAI.
Can't speak for the 70, but I considered the 40 and it was too loud for my tastes.
I sometimes wish it was a little louder, but it is nice when you get on it.
I had my pipe turned down after the muffler, I don't really like the look of the pipe turned behind the wheel...I know a buddy of mine had the 50 series put on the same truck with the stock tip remaining and it sounds no different.
I have the 50 and love it. Like mcrensha mentioned, I didnt want the 40 either because I didnt want it to be too loud. The 50 is a nice compromise between a deep, throaty sound and a super loud exhaust. If I want loud ill drive the mustang, for a daily driver I just wanted it to sound good.
That sounds good. I guess the 50 is the way to go. Is there a fix for the drone or no. Being this is my daily driver, I would hate to get the drone again in this vehicle. Thanks guys.
I have the FM 70 on mine and absolutely love it. I previously had the FM 50 on a JEep Wrangler and there was noticable drone at highway speed, but probably because it was a small Jeep.
I got the 70, a Volant CAI and the Edge. The Volant makes more noise than my muffler did/does.
you could always have the shop add a resonator in front of the muffler to reduce the drone/noise. Most resonators look like a cherry bomb or glasspack muffler.
You cannot compare a V6 to a V8 when it comes to exhaust. IMHO it doesn't matter what exhaust you put on a V6..... it will still sound like crap! The 50 on the F150 doesn't drone at all. If you put a 70 on it, you might as well leave the stock exhaust on it.
Yes, The resonator will take away from the exhaust note. I tow regularly with my truck. It runs right in the typical "drone zone" of 2100-2200 RPM's while towing. There is NO drone at these RPM's. This truck is also my daily driver. I am running a 50 series SUV Flowmaster. 3"in 2 21/2" out. I tow with OD off and love the way it performs and sounds. Nice mellow rumble but not aggrevating in the cab like the 40 was.
I've had 40 series Flowmaster (cat back) on several trucks. The last was a Dakota quadcab ... the system was louder for some reason in the cab than it is on the '07 Screw I now have. Different insulation? Dunno.
I don't think the 40 series with one in/two out is too loud either. It could be a matter of taste, tho. I like some rumble with a V8 and the Flowmaster does it for me. There is no resonance in the cabin at any speed.
I have them mounted so they exit straight out the rear of the truck (like the OEM) and extend about 3 inches past the bumper. The tips are 3.5 inch slash cut SS deals. Perhaps all this helps keep the drone some others are having from what I see in my truck.
I would go with a 24 inch Magnaflow. It will be the deepest sounding of all the mufflers mentioned, with a nice mellow growl. NO drone on the highway. My 18" is very loud when I'm on it but when I'm cruising on the highway it's dead silent. I believe the baffle design of the Flowmaster (besides being inferior performance-wise) generates a lot of drone.
