Background: 2000 psd., 6" lift, banks powerback package, manual. when i romp on it in first and shift to second after a couple of seconds in second gear the truck cuts out for a quick second and comes back to life. the check engine goes on then truns of couple minutes later?? also happens sometimes when i go over a bump. anyone have any idea???
You might have what I just fixed.. A loose 9 pin under the valve cover connector. The plastic locking tabs warp and the connector becomes loose. Any jerking of the truck, just as a bump in the road would cause the problem.. My Check engine light would come on and the engine would miss (one the injectors becomes disconnected).
After the engine would cool off, it would somehow reconnect and it would run fine for a while.. You can check it with a ohm meter..Ford has a fix, a new plastic clip.. but i just made a .065 think shim and slipped under the plastic locking tab..Works great. Check for fault codes.. if you get a P1316.. it's probably what i said above..Welcome to the forum..
Does the tach drop out? If so a faulty cam position sensor could be at fault. My 2002 6speed F 450 did the same twice and went directly to closest dealer for new sensor. They do not get better or fis themselves.
i will check the chip if it is loose i will see what i can come up with. also when i warm up my truck in the morning it will shut off if i get out of it wrong. i must hit the chip located near the clutch to the left. it only has happened to me twice.
it happened again tonight i went over a bump hitting the gas and it did it again but i went over it again with not hitting of the gas pedal and nothing happened and the service engine light stayed on this time. i will check it tomorrow and see what i come up with if it is the chip. if that is not it what is this " loose 9 pin under the valve cover connector" what is that and where is it located, how many ohms is this pin?? and yes the tach does drop out so where is the cam positioning sensor located/??
just started my truck to warm up this morning and i hit the chip with my hand and the truck wanted to shut off therefore i am thinking it is the chips connections it is loose. i hope it is not a defaulty chip. it has been in there for a while with no problems until a week ago. hope it is just the connections on the chip. will check them and keep you guys updated.
Good.. sounds like you found your problem.. For future reference, the 9 pin connector is located at the upper edge of your valve covers.. Loosen connector and then you can check the ohm resistance at the pins with ohm meter.. Use the following info for checking:
GGIICIIGG
G - Glow Plug
I - Injector +
C - Injector -
Ohms between the G and block Ground should be 0.1 - 2.0 ohms.
Ohms between the I and C one at a time if one or more is > 5 ohms, it will point to the side's gasket connector or UVC harness being shorted.
just checked my computer and it looks like it is in there solid no loose connections. what can be the problem?? the computer's insides?? i have the otto mind from banks and it fits in there but could be reinforced but not sure it is the problem any sugestions on reinforcing it. can i drive the truck without he chip in there? can i put a edge chip in there??

I just ran into this problem a couple of weeks ago. Along with the 9 pin connector, you might want to look at the harness as it goes over the valve cover. For some reason mine was rubbing against it and wore the cover off to expose the wires. When I hit bumps, or when the winds was in excess here in Washington state which it has been in the Skagit valley, I would get a SES light and it would go into limp mode. I would pull over and it would start running fine. I am not sure if this helps but it is worth looking at. I fixed my wire harness and no problems since (knock on wood).
Yes, when i was repairing my 9 pin connector, i noticed that my wire harness was also laying on the valve cover and thought it did not look good.. Lucky it had not started to remove the wire insulation yet.. I just bent the black metal bracket that the harness goes thru which help the harness stay above the valve cover. (driverside). Another thing to check is the large connector (same harness). I took mine apart and it was starting to get alittle corrorsion on the pins. I used some electrical cleaner spray and fine brush and clean the pins.. But, i main problem was the 9 pin connector.. Been running great ever since..I still need to look at the pass. side 9 pin connector.. Hate to have it go bad when we are on vacation or out on the road somewhere..
i think i figured it out. i took out my chip and i blew into it and now it works fine no problems. nock on wood. it was probably just loose and needed to be pushed in. thank you everyone.
