Red face Cam break in

I have an 84 Ford F250 4x4 truck. Im puttin in an edelbrock 4 bbl dual plane intake, 4bbl performer 650cfm carb, and an edelbrock cam with the lifters. my questions is since im doin the cam swap the break in is crucial for it to last along time, since ive never run the carb on my truck before and I got it for free off another truck. What if the motor starts and dies? will the cam be ok or grinding down? The directions say as follows:

1. Be sure to properly break-in your new Edelbrock Performer-Plus, Performer RPM, and Torker-Plus camshaft. Proper break-in procedure starts with a liberal coating of the special cam/lifter lube (supplied with your Edelbrock camshaft) on the cam lobes and base of the lifters. When the engine is started for first time, immediately bring the engine speed to about 2000 rpm for 20 minutes. Change oil and filter before and after cam break-in, and vary engine speed between 1500 and 2500 rpm every few minutes. Don't forget to keep an eye on engine temperature, too.

what would happen if I couldnt get the motor to fire right away? Since Ive never changed a cam before, I did the timing set awhile back. Does the break in time seem a little quick? Any ideas? Thanks, Matt

If possible put the carb on the truck before you change the cam an tune it. Then shut her down and bring the motor to TDC on #1 and mark/make note of the distributor location.
Now you can replace the cam and put everything back to where it should fire and run half decent for cam breakin. It's not the end of the world if you have to start the motor several times during breakin though.

thanks for the quick reply. Sadly its not possible because the motor is already apart and all the bolts r bagged! So its ok to try to start it a few times? Should I find another pickup and tune it on that?
