Recommendation...

Will the stock valve springs hold up to a 35-349-8 Comp Cam or should I go ahead and spring for new springs also.... I was told that this is the best cam for the buck that you can put in a early roller cam motor? I drive a 1992 Ford F-150 302EFI+E4OD combo and I was told that I have a roller motor in which ford used the small base hydraulic roller cam which really needs to be upgraded anyways... I am looking for all the performance I can get out of my SB 302 and I thought a cam would definitely be the way to go? Being that the truck is not a daily driver and is more of a pleasure toy to drive I really don't care about reliability for the most part, really like to squeeze the most I can out of the motor itself and drive along. Figured with the current setup I have now running 33 inch mud tires and I regeared last year to 4.10's all around be a pretty killer combination with the 35-349-8 cam from Comp Cams as recommended by Conanski here on the board!

What do you guys think honestly what should I do,
Jason

it's not a small base circle cam, should just be a regular old roller cam.

and I would get the springs they are cheap.................

Hey Hemi, is it even worth sticking another cam in my 92 F-150 302EFI motor... I mean the cam is $264.00 and valve springs will probably bring the total over $300+ is it worth it man....

Well I really don't want to give up 3mpg in my lifted ford just for a cam upgrade and with the cam upgrade it will probably rob me of the mileage I like currently? I would really only like to get 300hp of my motor and maybe 350 ft/lb's of torque that should be cheap enough what you think?

300 hp in a 302 will cost you money and milage.... My truck pulled 234 @ the wheels...about 300 @ the flywheel. look at my dyno vid, on that page is my combo, small 270S comp cam with ported E7 heads with bigger valves. I got 8 MPG with that combo......after i changed from 4.56 to 3.55 gears.......

here is my combo
302 stock bore and loose holed, should have been bored
Iron E7 heads 1.94 1.60 Ported
5.0 stock forged piston 0 deck
9.5 to 1
Comp Cams 270S solid flat 224 224 @ .050 500 lift
Comps dual springs
Comps roller tip rail type rockers
Performer RPM intake
Holley 650DP, 69 primarys 74 secondarys, 31 pri squirter 25 sec squirter
Duraspark msd 6A
HV pump
APR pump shaft, rod bolts, head bolts
Motorsport windage tray

C6 with E4OD gear set
Small stall 2000
Shift kit
Not sure what transfer case I have????
9" 31 spline posi 4.56
31" tires

What makes you think you'll loose 3mpg with this cam? If you're flooring it, it'll make more power than the stock motor, and HP requires fuel, simple. But if you're just cruising around, the cammed motor will make more low rpm torque, so that milage will be better than stock.

Either way.. there's no danger of the 302 making 350 ft/lbs of torque unless you stroke it, add a blower, or bump the compression to 11:1. The cheaper way to get there is to install a 351. Whatever way you get to 300hp, it's going to cost you fuel when you're using it.

302's with the right aftermarket heads can easily make 350 lb-ft of tourqe at 9 to 10:1 compression. No stroker kits required.

He wasn't referring to it as a small base circle cam, but rather the smallest "base" roller cam Ford used in the roller 5.0's. Ford referred to it as the "base" roller.

So it is with a 351w as well, once you get enough cam and head to get 350+ lb-ft from the 351.

A 351 with E7 type heads makes as much as about 325-330 lb-ft, and no more than 320 HP max.

A 351w with GT40 Cobra heads and a cam makes 360 lb-ft at 4250 rpm (345 HP).

A 351w with GT40Y heads and a cam makes 375 lb-ft at 4500 rpm (385 HP).

A 302 with TFS heads and a cam makes 370 lb-ft at 4500 rpm.

A stock 351w is a cheaper alternative for a little more low end tourqe than a near stock 302, but a near stock 351w is not eqivilant to a properly built 302, in any way. It still takes heads and a cam to get the 351 to match or exceed a well built 302, and it still takes some rpm. If a guy already has a 302, it will be better and less expensive to build up the 302, rather than swap in a stock level 351w, if 350+ lb-ft of tourqe is the goal.
