Hello everyone. I've heard that this forum is very helpful when it comes to advise for the "non-powerstroke savvy." I am going to possibly purchase a 99 Crew Cab PS 4x4 this afternoon. Everything seemed to be in working order, very clean, and drove well. The truck has 192,000 miles. My main question is, should the high mileage scare me off? I'll primarily be using the truck to pull my boat to the lake on the weekends. I am able to pick it up for 11.5k but before I do, I'd love some of ya'lls input on the mileage and what to expect out of a truck with this use. Also, 11.5k....pretty good price?? Thanks for any advice!!
Welcome to FTE.
I wouldn't be afraid of the high mileage as long as the truck was taken care of and it's not rusted out from being in a high salt environment. You'll have to deal with normal wear and tear items like brakes, etc. That's a given with that sort of mileage. The price is ok, IMO. It's $30,000.00 cheaper than a new truck and you can buy a LOT of repairs for that amount of money which makes it worth the purchase as long as the truck itself isn't a toad.
Where do you live? Someone in your local area might know of a knowledgable shop to take a look at it.
I'm in Dallas. I checked for rust and it looks good. I was going to try to go lower on the price but instead the dealer said he's throw in a ranch hand grill guard up front and do some exhaust work for me (straight pipes). That also raises another question...is it ok to run straight pipe exhaust. Will there still be enough backpressure and should i expect any problems with no cat or muffler? I'm assuming that that would be loud and have a lot of turbo whistle which is fine but want to make sure i'm not hurting anything. sorry for all the questions!
If it's a Texas truck, be wary of Katrina damage unless you can verify that it spent it's entire life inland.
Enough time has gone by to where that's not really an issue anymore, but I had to say it for your sake.
Diesels work the best with zero back pressure, so yeah, get rid of that muffler. You'll like the way it sounds.
I have a 5" exhaust that sounds like nothing else. Click on my signature where it says "5" exhaust" and listen. You may decide that a simple straight pipe is simply not enough.
price sounds very good for 99 crew cab. assuming XLT. The hgih mileage is not a big deal for the engine. the trans and the rest of the truck will need some work possibly. brakes and suspension parts being the likely issues. saying all that I just bought a 97 crew cab with 220K on it with out a worry. I am also a mechanic though and can all my own work not matter what it is.
All in all it sounds like a good deal. I would make sure the dealership has done a full brake and suspension inspection and get it signed that all is in good working order.
