you need some momentum to make it up steep hills. if you stop half way up, you might have trouble getting it going again.
I found that out today. I had to back down one hill, but got a little momentum going and it went right up. I am pretty amazed what it can do. Having reverse is great. It did pretty well going over fallen trees and some pretty tricky rocky parts. I rode it for about 7 miles today. It was fun because there is about 1" of snow out there, but it was really cold. I think it made 26 degrees today. My fingers were gone by the time I got home.
Sorry I gotta laugh at anybody that calls 26 degrees cold. When I started by boat this morning it was 14 degrees and it will warm up to 25 by the time I come in. This is a good day. Last week went to the boat and it was 2 degrees and it warmed up to 14. I am working out on the water so I am wet for most of the day.
As for your quad they sell heated grips. I had them on the raptor and they were great.
Haha... OK 26 is not that cold, but it was windy if that helps my case any!! What do you do for work up there fredbuilt? I basically live in Tenants Harbor and Rockland in the summer. I help my cousins on their lobster and fishing boats.
Lobstering, carpentry, marine mechanic, boat repair. Just bought the bought the boat I have been in the Navy the past 8 years just got home, but I do alot to keep me busy, and money in my pocket. This time of year I don't get out on the water much.
26 degrees is cold in my book and if you are on an atv or motorcycle, factor in the windchill too!
I used to ride a motorcycle year round and I have ridden my atv in cold temps but it's no fun. If the temps drop below 50 here, we don't get the atvs out and by contrast, if the temps are in the high 90's with high humidity....they stay in the sheds.
Cold you should try doing 50km/hr down the river when it's -4C that's chilly. Even worse is on the quad at -20C. Have fun on your new quad. The biggest difference between 2wd and 4x4 I find is that with a 4x4 you can tread way lighter on the trail. Not making so many ruts etc. To me this makes for a more enjoyable ride on the trail in the future.
I have notcies that the 2wd eats up the trail more which is disappointing, but the trails are pretty messed up to begin with. They have had ATVS on them for 25 years.
I just wanted to give this a little update and keep the thread running. The Trailblazer that I bought ran good for about a week and then would break down everytime I rode. Something would always happen to it. After being nickeled and dimed to death it finally died for good. The piston bearing had gone bad and turned the cylinder into an oval. It was pretty much toast. It was my fault for being cheap and buying it in the first place. A good lesson was learned! A local dealer offered me $575 for it on a trade fro something else. I went and bought an '01 Polaris Scrambler 500 4X4 auto. It is in mint shape and has a brand new tranny. It was the owner of the dealership's grandsons. It has all the maintenance logs and everything. It is so much nicer. I put 50 miles on it this weekend without an issue. There is just so much more power. Anybody who is wanting a sporty ATV with 4WD this is the one for you. I think the '07s are going for around $6,000 new.
I don't doubt a 2wd will go almost anywhere a 4wd will. I have a friend that goes almost anywhere I go. You do have to drive more aggressive to do it. I use my 4wd to plow food plots & I've never seen a 2wd that will pull the plow I use. I'd like a quad that I could shut off the 4wd but I'm too cheap to replace my old 95 Kodiac. I should break 1,000 miles on it this yr. It gets me every where I try to go. I don't play on it I just use it for hunting & fishing.
ive always prefered anything 2wd, as I like to go faster, but jsut one time I almost went 4x4 it was when (i think 2000?)when polaris came out with there deisel 4x4 quad, there was a dealer who had one hooked up the a cultivator and it would pull it around efforlessly! and it was diggin the ground up not jsut rolling on top, I was really impressed! but other than that no, no 4x4, or you could judt throw caution in the wind and pick up a polaris 6x6!
I've been in places that you honestly NEED 4wd. In winter and when it's muddy on 100 acres you don't wanna be walking back to the house! lol... I'll stick with my 4-wheel (although we usually will take the J.D. 6 wheel wonder known as the Gator
