This gets ask once every other week or so, but your new and wouldn't know that. The 3.0 isn't great on gas, the 4.0 sohc is better and the 2.3 duratec is great. The 3.0 is an old design and kind of worthless in terms of power and mpg, the 2.3 has as much power and the 4.0 has as good of mpg if not better, it's the odd man out, however it's very dependable. A lot of people complain about the rangers mpg, but it's not just a ranger thing, all small v6 trucks, more so 4x4's don't get that great of mpg. I'm sorta lucky, I have a 4x4 with a 4.0, I get 22/24, but I do all most no city driving as I live and work in the country. I also have a manual tranny, that seems to help a long with running all synthetic fluids in the drive train.
rather off topic, but on the mpg front...i know a guy that's got a 4cyl toyota pickup. it's a 4x4 and only gets about 18mpg highway. i was shocked. i guess the 4x4 really kills things
I have a '97 2.3L. Is that the duratec? I've only just bought it and gone through one tank. 20 mpg all city driving. Is that typical? Not a 4x4 and it's a manual splash.
No, it's not a duratec, it's the old lima, they didn't start using the duratec untill the middle of 01. 20 mpg all city isn't bad for a lima, make sure it has clean oil and a good tune up and proper tire inflation, also a clean airfilter.
I'm not that impressed with my mileage. 20 city, 23 hwy, one tank of drive it to get best it can get all highway I did get 26 though. This is 2006 supercab 2wd 2.3 manual trans very basic truck. Plenty of power for me, but I anticipated averaging 25-26. I do carry some tools but nowhere near overloaded. EPA sticker said 24 city, 29 highway. For this mileage, I could have a v6 ranger or v6 f150!! Plus, Dash rattles, Clutch has already been replaced, and I'm about to take it back in for vibration during idle. I wouldn't get another one.
My son as an 04 ranger xlt regularcab, short bed, it as the 2.3 duratec with an auto tranny, he gets 24-25 around town and 29 highway. Alot of people have reported good mpg with the duratec, but there's allways varibles.
