I need to replace the knock sensor on my 1994 Explorer and I have looked and looked and I can't find it. I purchased a new one so I would know exactly what I was looking for and I still can't find it. Could someone tell me where it is? I suspect it must be buried somewhere. My manual (Chilton) doesn't show it. Thanks in advance.
You can't find it because there isn't one to my knowledge.
Most of the knock (pinging) in these year models is MAF related. There is a sticky link at the top of the forum related to MAF cleaning.
Other possibilities are all related to unmetered air entering they system. Broken vacuum hoses, leaking intake mainfold gaskets (loose lower intake manifold bolts) and so on.
Post your symptoms, what you have done so far, and the forum will walk you thru things to try.
Hello. Symptoms are....sounds like it's going to throw out all the valves and pre-detonation knock only under heavy load such as climbing mountains. I also notice the temp guage climbs clear up the the "H" and when you top the mountain it cools back off to a normal reading. I have replaced the thermostat and it's didn't change this. I suspect the radiator may be clogged up as it is just getting ready to click over 200k. Mechanic who recommended tchanging the knock sensor says it is getting hot because it is running poorly. (Incidentally he can't tell me where the knock sensor is either, other than it will have coolant behind it)
What I have done so far....Checked all vacuum hoses and cleaned the MAF per suggestions. No difference. A Ford mechanic told me to get the knock sensor and they sold me one at the parts store, so I am curious as to how there may not be one since they sold me one. Now I am more confuse. Hope this helps.
My '92 had some similar issues (especially with it getting real hot and pinging when it got that hot). Turned out to be a bad fan clutch which wasn't spinning the fan up to speed to keep the engine cool.
Of course, I also have to periodically clean my MAF and check my lower intake manifold bolts to keep those from causing it to ping.
