All excursions, all years, have a Dana 50 axle. Ford NEVER offered or put in anything else on the EXCURSIONS. Never. Period. No Way.
I have paper copies of every source book, owners manuals, Ordering book, Brochure, Accessories book, and accessories list that was made for all years of the Excursion. I have them right here.
All years, all models of Excursions have Ford 10.50 rear axles.
The Dana 50 axles themeselves are rated for 5200lbs
The Ford rear axles themeselves are rated ro 7000lbs.
Looking at the printed source book on page 31, it says 7000lbs, not 6830. The 6830 is obviously a misprint on the webpage.
I would like to clarify one thing for you. Whatever the axle itself is rated for, it is NOT the TRUCK axle rating. The front or rear axle rating for the truck is determined by Ford and is based on the parts that have the lowest capacity. It could be brakes, lug nuts, wheels, tires, springs, frame, or whatever. They are the only ones that know for absolutely sure. The factory truck axle rating is far less than the the excursions axles can handle.
We can take some very educated guesses at it, and we do. Ford designers admitted that they derated the springs to give a softer ride. This indicates that it could carry more safely. To be able to do so, you would need to change the springs to onws with a hight=er rating, or supplement them with airbags or helper springs. Since all other parts in the suspension are the same, and it has a very robust frame, if you were to change the springs, we change them out to the ford F250/350 springs, which have weight ratings that correspond exacly to the weight ratings of the axles. 2000 - 2001 Used the Dana 50 front axle
2002 - 2005 Used the Dana 60 front axle
My understanding is Limited Slip was not standard on any model it was an added option for all models.
Sorry 3kiddad, but it was the ford Superduty pickups that changed to a Dana 60, not the Excursions. I wish I had a Dana 60. But I had to install a ring and pinion set for a dana 50 when I upgraded to 4.30's.
Well darnit is it the 50 or 60. everyone says something different. I have never even heard of a 50. I thought it went 30, 35, 44, 60, 70, 80, 90? How much better is the 60 over the 50?
I did 4.88s on my '02 V10 and the front was a Dana 50. If I remember right it limited the choices I had on a limited slip. I ended up going with an ARB Locker.

Housedad while we are on the subject, i can kinda read the tags on my diffs but i am trying to figure out what gears i have, i am assuming it is still stock, i am pretty sure the the rear one had some stuff that made me think 4.30 but that didn't seem right to me. is there a listing for what the tags will read and what they mean is inside?
You door jamb label should have the axle code. Axle codes are posted in my Super Duty FAQ that is stickied on top of the Super Duty forum.
housedad is 100%. Excursions never had Dana 60s. Only Dana 50s which have necked down half-shafts and a different spline count fron the 60 if I remember correctly.
Also, axle rating are posted on that same door jamb label.
