Check out Fleetfilters.com They sell every filter you may need. I get mine by the case and they work really well. They sell the filters made by WIX and after several oil samples sent to Blackstone labs, they tell me my filteration is EXCELLENT and I have gone from 3000 to 4500 on my Taurus and 4500 to 5500 on the PSD. Every sample I send in they tell me how much life is left in the oil and in time, when I determine the max length I will be finally getting the most out of the oil and filters.
Ohhhhhh... I was afraid somebody was going to say that... How expensive and complicated does being a Diesel owner have to be? Thanks for the heads-up tho...
I was going to say, the answer to this question depends on how well the previous owner took care of your PSD, and equally important is how well you take care of it now and in the future. When they break, they break big and they'll break your wallet. If you treat them well, as so i've heard and learned, they'll last 3X as long as your average sparker.
As a new (almost a year now) PSD owner myself, i've learned to think two things about diesels: Thing BIG, and think SIMPLE. Big as in huge solid steel heavy duty, and simple as in, well, about as simple as a 350 chevy, except with a sensor here and there.
As far as FRAMS go, i've heard horror stories about those. Your dealer will carry motorcraft filters (and most will haggle on price with you, or, at least mine does, because their stuff is more expensive). You can get WIX or those other brands online pretty easily if you are the type to plan ahead.
