Is there any way to adapt a 1986 300 inline 6 engine to a stock 3 speed manual trans in a 1959 F-100? The truck was originally equipped with a 223 straight 6. Is there any reasonable way to do this engine swap or would I need a new trans as well?
Thanks
I'm wanting to put a 300 and AOD in my 57 F100, and was hoping you got some response to your post, so I could learn as well. We may have to be the ground breakers ourselves. The torque of a 300, with 370 gears, would be just the ticket for me when I need to pull something. The OD would make it liveable on the highway, and the six would sound SWEET (with dual exaust) all of the time. Let me know if you do it.

Thanks for your response. Let me know. I guess the people on the board think my question is to dumb to even offer their opinion. Maybe it is, but it would be nice to get some feedback. I was hoping I could bolt the old 3 speed to the 300 with either the old or the new bellhousing and hoped to get some opinions before I bought the 300.
I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to let you know your question wasn't a dumb one at all. I'm sorry I couldn't be of any help to you.

I agree. Nothing worse than putting time and money into something only to find out it doesn't work. I guess it will all depend on whether or not your old bell housing will match up to your newer motor, or if the new bell housing (if you have one) will match up to your old tranny (I know I'm not telling you anything new here). Did you try asking on the engine conference? Just a thought, but maybe someone there may know if the bell housings are the same bolt pattern. If it were me I would go for the newer tranny, use the original column shift setup, and modify the cross member and linkages to work.
Kenny
The trans I have a line on with the 300 is a 4 speed with OD. I'd like to keep the column shift.I'll try the engine message board. Thank you. I appreciate your input.
58,
It can be done there are a couple of companys that make adaptor plates for the tranny swap, one of which is TANS-DAPT. If you can get a newwer tranny I would say change it to. The problem with the old trannys are that they are OLD and getting parts are harder everday. As far as the engine swap it isn't that hard you will probably have to make motor mounts, I haven't seen anyone selling 300 conversion mounts. I bought 302 mounts from TRANS-DAPT, but now that I have them I would have made my own and just bought replacement rubber parts from them. There is one thing to be said about keeeping your original tranny and that is that you won't have to have a drive line made. I'm doing a 302/C6 converision and I will have to have a drive line made.
As far a online links I linked TD through the PAW INC web site.
Their adress is (pawinc.com) then go to the manufactures list page and look for TD performance.
Hope this helps.

302/C6 (it'll run someday)
You are the MAN!!! Thanks. My idea is to use the 300 and keep the option open down the road of going back and rebuilding the 223 to keep everything stock.
Again, a response like this is what I have been hoping for and this is the spirit that makes these message boards work. Thanks again for your expertise.
I have a 58 ford with a 300 straight six and it bolted right to the original three speed. But i had to move the radiator back and put an electric fan, and theres still only an inch in between the water pump and fan. I also had to cut the front cross member so the harmonic balancer had room. Its a tight fit from frnt to rear but not impossible.
the 300 six has the same bolts pattern as a 289 or302(bell housing) six bolts. you will be better off if you use a fully sycronize Tran there is one bell housing has two set of bolts pattern on it. It will take all three speed and four speed tran. I think you will find it on 65 thru 69 mustang, falcon, mercury car.Maybe this will help you out. I have a 48 F1 with 271 hp 289 v8. using a adapter plate stock 3 tran. Best of lucks
when you you get the 300 in there, you'll never want to go back to the 223. I driven both and the 300 is a world apart in comparison. I had a 300 with a 78 4 speed with overdrive in a 66 and would get 22mpg on the highway and could still pull my car trailer with more power than a fuel injected 302 in my 86 F150.
Anything further on this swap?
Did you do it?
I could use the info myself.
I've a '71 300 I-6 & have been told to mount a Late Model Aluminium Case AOD.
Does the late Model have the Hard Shift Linkage or the Cable ?
I'm not up todate on all this New stuff, Mid 60's & on back is what I know some bits & bobs on, so could use the help.
