Exhaust manifold replacement?

I have a 99 F150 4x4 (4.6L) with rusted exhaust manifold bolts. Two bolts are broken and it won't pass inspection. I was thinking I would pull the heads to get at the manifold.

The engine is recessed into the firewall. I'm not sure I can even get the heads out without removing the engine? Does anyone know if this is the case?

Thx...Tony

Welcome to the forum.

The heads will come off in the truck.
You can't access the manifolds from the fenderwell???

One of my exhaust manifolds, on the drivers side, also has 1 stud rusted and broke off. I would think you could get to the exhaust manifold from the fenderwell like LxMan1 says. Let us know how it goes. I was thinking of putting on aftermarket shorty tube headers instead of another weak ... manifold with pencil thin studs.

I was planning to remove the plastic fender well today and try to get at the bolts. At first glance it looked like I couldn't access all the manifold bolts from the fender well. Will trry and let you know..

Thx...Tony

I installed my headers by removing the fender liners. Its still a tight fit but it can be done.

I'm going to give it a shot next week. My biggest concern was breaking off the rusted bolts, then having to drill em out. I just figured it would be easier to pull the heads off and do it on the bench.

Thx again...Tony

lariat97, what brand of header did you install? Did you have any trouble w/ the exhaust manifold bolts? Is it possible to post pic's? Thanks.

I don't have pics. I installed JBA shorty headers. I soaked the studs overnight in PB blaster. Soak the EGR line too. They came out all right. None of mine were rusted off. Its still tight around the motor mounts but it can be done. Just plan on it taking most of a day. Use antiseaze on the studs you use to reinstall the manifolds

Have the same problem, with one broken manifold bolt. The mechanic (I'm not mechanically inclined) told me that it would be difficult since the studs are steel and the head is aluminum. He said most the time the studs break off and they can't be drilled out. He said he would try, but usually ended up having to replace the head.
How difficult is it to get the studs out without destroying the head?

Hello and Welcome to the site.

I've had both sides of mine done and they didn't have to pull the head. What is involved is removing all of the nuts and moving the manifold out of the way. Expect a few more studs to break during this process. Hopefully, the studs did not break flush with the block. If the stud is still sticking out from the block, a set of vise grips is then used to get the stud out.
