im planning on painting my truck soon with a forest green metallic lacquer. i decided to use lacquer since my dad already had enough for the whole truck. the paint is kinda old but still seems to be good, it has not hardened or seperated or anything.
i know lacquer isn't durable so i was wondering if you can put clear coat over it? is ther a special kind i would need?ive done a search on this and came up with nothing.is there anything else special to painting with lacquer?ive painted a few trucks before, mostly with enamel and i think im decent at spraying.any feedback would be appreciated.thanks!
If your thinkin of buying clear to put over it, why not just buy some Centrai.
Clear may cost as much as new fresh enamel .
Depending how you sealed it lacquer may cause some lifting problems?
Rather than tryin to save a few bucks use something your comfortable with
or it may end up costing you more in the end. Also doing things twice dont add up either way.
Good luck.

I'd have to buy enamle and go that way. Lacqure (?) will lift enamle paint. It will look likes it's melting, bubble, wrinkle.
To save a couple bucks you can use a single stage enamle. This will dry with a decent finish. Or use a two stage paint, second being a coat of clear.
This can save a nasty headache later.

do you mean lifting of the old paint? most of the truck has been took down to metal and has 3-4 coats of primer. im not to worried about anyting like that cause im goin to do a test panel first to make sure and if something happens i'll change plans. i was just wondering if the clear will react with it.
Yes if the lacqure lifts anything it would be the old paint, if it is enamle.
Is the truck old enough to be lacqure paint? But if you've gone to bare metal, you should be fine.
Are you going to put a good coat of sealer on before you paint? You're paint will adhear/stick better to sealer than primer.
Bob
the truck is a 78.i was plannin on sprayin the floorborads with sealer to try an keep them from rusting out again but i was gonna just use primer on the rest.
I am in the process of painting my 79 with lacquer. One advantage to using it is that is easy to recoat when it gets damaged, but if you clear coat it, I doubt that it would be that easy. Just something to consider.
I used to finish over lacquer with urethane,I got away with it but it is not really the best way to go. The lacquer reducers get trapped under the urethane and cause numerous problems, some take months to show up. The new high solids urethanes are the way to go..But if you're more comfortable with enamels, at least use one that you can catalize such as Centari. With paint, everything that you put into it, shows in the end.
figured id update this. we put a coat of the lacquer on first and the color was way too dark for what i wanted. we had about half a pint of acrylic enamel in the exact color i wanted so we ended up goin that route and using it on both doors. came out pretty good, a few runs but i expected that given the circumstances with no room to move around and stuff. the acrylic hasn't done anything to the lacquer we sprayed on first and its been 3-4 weeks.they'll prolly get another coat or so anyway when i get the paint, waitin on funds right now.
