C6 install probs

Hi , im in the process of converting my 1990 F150 4x4 from m5od to a C6.
everything was going great untill it came to sliding the c6 into place . it seems the dowels dont line up . the c6 is out of a early 80s truck with a cleveland .
This is driving me a bit crazy as everything else seems to fit . Is it possible its not the dowels ? I would have thought the splines on the converter would engage by more than 12mm . I also thought the cleveland and windsors were the same.

One thing to check when you are trying to mate up a transmission and engine is that your torque converter is fully engaged into the tranny. Slowly rotate the TC while pushing on it and should slide in an additional 3/4 of an inch if it was not fully engaged with the transmission pump. This just happened to me last week and I thought the TC was fully engaged, but it was not. I was having the same trouble you described and I rechecked the TC and found it was not in all the way. Another thing to check is that the TC mounting studs are lined up with their respective flexpate holes. Another thing that can help you during this bolt-up process is a couple long threaded studs screwed into the rear of the engine in place of two of the bell housing mounting bolts can help you line everything up during the bolt-up process.

thanks guys ,
Got it sorted , The torque converter wasnt on properly , i was sure it was ,but it wasnt
I originally was bolting the TC to the flex plate then sliding the trans onto the TC . I pulled the TC off then slid it onto the trans .Then i wiggled and rotated it for a while and made sure it was on then slid the whole shebang up to the motor . This was much easier and worked first time .Then all i had to do was bolt up the TC through where the starter motor goes.

There should be a removeable plate to gain access to the convertor nuts.
No need to use the starter hole.

No worries , i had the starter out anyway , my workshop manual is packed away at the moment hence all the drama . Hopefully all i need to do now is install the b&m truck shifter and hook up the vacuumn line and the oil cooler.
Cheers

always fully seat the tc into the trans before trying to install any auto trans, bolting the tc to the flex plate like that will never get it in easily and if you do get it bolted up i would give very good odds you broke the front pump drive gear at the same time finding it out the hard way.like i did in 1962.

good to know you found out guy and i wish you good luck that nothing was damaged trying to get it in.
