not to derail this thread but i noticed when i had the bed 3/4 full with stuff the mileage jumped for 2 tank fulls to 13 mpgs.I emptied it out and now the mpgs dropped back to 10.Its a 5.4l sc sb with 3300 miles and 103 hrs on it.I thought that was pretty wierd hence me askin if anyone has a seen a difference.i know every driver is different and every climate is diiferent and who knows what crap they are puttin in gasoline.Just my thought ,any body got any ideas?...
I heard that the design of the truck makes the air funnel behind the cab and over the bed so that the presence (or lack of) of a cover won't make a big difference in fuel economy.
Mythbusters did a test on mileage with the tailgate open and shut, found shutting the tailgate actually improved mileage............however, the tests were done on F-150 SuperCrew trucks with the midget beds on them. Would love to see that repeated on a Superduty.
Everyone i ask around locally says that they seen mythbusters and that it proves that tonneaus wont help mileage .My reply is that 1.That test was performed on a totally redesigned truck, a 150, where the SD have just had minor changes for the past 8 model years.2.These are just two different animals im sure if you wind tunneled both trucks there would be a difference between them.Im not an expert just my opinion .
I don't know but the way they showed the airflow over the cab with the fishtank model I would think with a longer bed the tailgate is further from the cab to allow more air getting trapped in the bed. But it would be a good one to see of course it doesnt affect me none I know the flatbed dropped mine at least 2 mpg.
The problem with all these tests is that airflow is totally different at changing speeds. An airfoil on the decklid on any race car will create downforce at one speed, and can actually lessen at higher speeds due to the effect of the air moving over the roof of the car.
Scale models to show airflow is also a joke. Air itself is a constant mass with constant flow qualities. Unless you can find 1/8 scale air, you will not be able to predict diddly squat with your 1/8 scale car.
Put it to you this way - If you could use mini scale models to predict airflow, then why don't you see plastic miniature heads and intakes to predict port modifications on a flowbench?
Pace Edwards Full-Metal JackRabbit what I got for my 2007 F250 SD and I love it! It's secure and super easy to install (no drilling). Fits flush with the bed of truck and looks great too. The cost is well worth it for a top that will last for years and it comes with a 3yr warranty all others are only 1.
Anybody use the Undercover tonneaus covers? I priced them from two different dealers in my area from about $750 to $850. Just wondering about quality and durability.
I have one and love it. very durable, the quality is good, but not great
I think what the Myth Busters episode proved is that there are a lot of variables depending on the configuration of the truck and that and claims of better gas mileage are suspect depending on said configuration! If there weren’t a lot of variables they wouldn’t have had to do two shows on the same subject showing different results in each!

Do you have any pictures of it installed on the truck? Where are you in Florida? I would like to see one in person before I buy a cover.
