gauges
The Cable has a plastic drive on the end where it engages and plugs into the speedometer head. It is designed to snap to prevent speedometer head wind up, and damage.
Also remove the cable and check to see if it's not damaged. Any broken cable filaments, frays or weirdness replace it.
Make sure you lubricate the cable with speedometer cable lubricant, or in a pinch, white lithium grease, to keep everything working smoothly and to prevent speedometer needle "hop".

The two instrument clusters mentioned above are interchangeable. So if you want to upgrade to Factory Tach, this is your chance. They just plug and play swap. The truck is already wired for tach if it has factory gauges.
Don't discriminate because of transmission either. Just swap the Automatic tranny, Shift Quadrant selector, for the blank in your old cluster. It's held on with two bolt headed screws.

Sometime back maybe a year ago. A guy posted a link about buying white backed stock gauges I think they were offered on ebay. If you need only a speedo the wrecking yard is going to be your best bet. outside of ebay.
