Take a wire tracer down with you turn on 2 switches, place tracer in one of the working outlets. Return upstairs, find traced one which in turn you now know which one was off and the other one that was on?

hehe, nope; the only tools you have are a pen to label the switch plates and your fingers.

Turn on one switch. Leave it on for ten minutes.

Turn on another switch and then immediately go downstairs.

One room will be off. That cooresponds to the switch that is still off.

One bulb will be HOT (and the ceiling above maybe warm). That cooresponds to the switch on for ten minutes.

One bulb will be on, but not hot. That cooresponds to the switch just turned on immediately before going downstairs.

Yes.

my version was to turn off the one that was on for ten minutes and turn a new one on. so there would be one on and two off - one warm and one cold.
