Although I currently run a Fram oil filter in my rig, I'm wondering about those K&N Performance Gold filters. Like this one: http://www.dieselpage.com/knoil.htm
They seem alright, only a few bucks more than the ones I currently buy. Anyone have experiance with these filters? I personally don't trust the K&N Air filters (because of my dusty area) but oil filters are a whole different ball game. Any thoughts?
I don't know Dave, are you useing the powerstroke oil filter with every 3,000 mile oil change ? If you had a brand new engine, maybe but I would ainti up & go synthetic before going to a K&N oil filter??
I'm not sure but I think the Powerstroke oil filter is smaller and longer than the ones I use for my IDI. I'm not too sure about sythetic oils myself but I'm looking for better filtration. Maybe I should see if Dave S. has any sythetics he recommends?
I have looked into those. I think the Fram will do for now considering its almost bigger than my hand haha. I was just wondering if the K&N performance gold filters were any good. They are supposedly high performance and I am wondering if anyone has had them on their rigs before...
I run Fleetguard LF3630 oil filters, Cummins Diesel owns Fleetguard. The extra quart+ of oil the filter holds gives it over twice the filter media area.
For fuel and air filters I run Purolator filters, change them every 6000 miles.
LF3630 is actually the IDI long filter from Fleetguard.
After 2000 miles of Delvac 1300 series oil I switched to Mobil synthetic oil which I change at 3000 miles. I just finished off my drum of Delvac 1 synthetic which they no longer make. I am going to Mobil 1 synthetic for my next change.
An 80 dollar oil change may seem like a lot, but I have many hours of labor and 4500 dollars worth of parts and machine work that I am protecting.
Nothing with Fram on it has been in any of my vehicles in over 35 years.

FYI, in addition to the Power Stroke filter holding an extra quart and having more media, it filters more finely than the standard 6.9L/7.3 filter. Because of HEUI, the PS engine needs a finer filter and Ford spec'ed one. Anyway, that works out really good for us old timers! Even the lower quality PS filters have better media than the equivalent brand IDI filter. I switched to PS filter years ago.
IMHO, you guys are wasting your money changing oil so often, especially with top quality synthetic. I've done 4,000 miles using Rotella-T or Delo 400 dino oil for the last 20 years and recently started doing oil analysis which shows I can go farther safely (perhpas helped by the PS filter). I am currently working on 5000 mile intervals and I'll let you know the results of the next test.

I am very interested in the results of your oil sample testing, Please keep us informed.
As I understand it, the normal IDI oil filter is rated @ 25 Microns, the PS same diamater but longer fiter is rated @ 19 Microns and both are listed as Full Flow. This info I got from the WIX filter site. It is very good for filter crossing and specifacations, even list all (Factory)applications of specific filters. http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp
I run a PS filter on my, Mighty Pre-94 Ford 7.3 NA, but just learned it's advantages!!!!
(I am not telling what color my filter is to try and avoid all harsh flames, :-) )
Yeah, the Wix site is very useful. I switched to Wix a coupla years ago from Motorcraft, which are good also. I had used them since '87. The Wix has an edge in quality, however. Just back away slowly from those orange filters, Ken, and we'll let you live!

Well after a little research I found that the K&N filter I posted can filter from 10-20 microns. Also 550 psi burst strength if that is at all useful. The K&N filter is supposedly bigger too to allow a bigger surface area.
It's your money and your truck, but I don't really think the K&N is worth the extra money. It's a good filter, no boubt, but the previously noted Wix can equal it in performance and the other brands aren't far enough behind to matter. My philosophy has always been, "the mostest for the leastest." I almost never buy to top priced item, but buy the upper middle priced item... especially those for which I can find test data. That offers the best value for my hard earned dollars.

I bet you are remembering a few years back when these filters were anywhere from $14-22. I looked and currently I pay about $7.99 for a filter. In my opinion $9.99 is a good price for the extra filtration it provides. I just don't want to slack in maintenance and pay for it down the road...
Synthetic is the way to go but if you add the cost of having it analyzed [$40.00 up here], you're better off just changing it a set interval....I know oil testing can really benifit the big rigs but we're talking about 10 quarts.
Anybody know the WIX or Napa filter # for the PS filter that will work on the 6.9 IDIs? What I just read in this thread convinced me to go to the PS filter - even if it does cost almost twice as much.
And probably to a 4k interval at the same time....
