I wouldn't use any filters other than Wix,Motorcraft,Donaldson or Fleetgard.
Using a Fram filter is like filtering oil through womens nylons aka not good for your engine.
I have been using pretty well nothing but Wix for years never had any problem with them. I also use regular dino oil a 5 gallon pail is 75 dollars CND and a PSD filter for my 95 PSD is is 22 dollars or so.
Oil and filters for me is cheap I would rather keep good clean oil in the engine than spending 7 grand on a rebuilt PSD. When I had my IDI I was the same kept the oil changed regulary.
Well, I was just asking opinions about giving a popular new brand a shot to see if it was that big of an improvement. I know everyone here is pretty much against Fram but I have never had problems with them. As for oil I usually buy Rotella-T 10W40 by the case for about $80. I also completely agree with you about the importance of maintenance...as mentioned in my previous post
bc6.9: I don't have analysis done every change. My driving situation is pretty standardized, so once I determine a good interval, it should work for me with only periodic tests every couple of years to reconfirm it. I'm doing testing on all my vehicles, a Honda Accord and two farm tractors as well the the old Powersmoke. One of the tractors had over 8,100 hours on it and has a sleeved engine. I was worried about coolant seepage into the oil and the test came out wonderful and I feel lots better. Can't beat those Neuss diesels! Anyway, I've been using Blackstone Labs <http://www.blackstone-labs.com/> and the tests cost $20 plus another $10 to test the TBN of the oil (recommended if you are trying to extend the interval). In the long run, it's worth the money to me but, I agree, you'll never do your engine wrong with a short OCI, just your wallet.
CheaperJeeper: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life. Wix filter lookup: <http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp>. I buy my Wix/Napa filters in bulk at Fleet filters <http://www.fleetfilter.com/index.html> & save some bucks.

CheaperJeeper: I listed the URLs for Wix filters and Fleet Filterin my previous post, but I guess that's not allowed. Just google 'em.

Thanks for trying, Jim.
I can google it - if I know what years of PS they are spec-ed for. I'm assuming not all PS filters will work? Or would it pretty much be the filter for ANY 7.3 PS will work?
From what I understand, the synthetic oils last for 10,000 miles. Also from what I understand, one can change the oil filter every 5,000 miles between the oil life of 10,000 miles.

Jim, you & Dave S. in my opinion, are both doing whats best for your IDI ....Jim, I gather you use your truck for non comercial use, while Dave S.'s is a work truck. Some will argue that synthetic oil can run 10,000 miles before being changed, the point that I was trying to make, that it is not cost effective to have an oil testing done, but as Jim pointed out he only has it done every couple of years which I think is a great idea.
The bottom line is that good maintenace is never a bad idea, we can argue till the cows come home on when to change synthetic oil [unless it is tested ]
Did I see some one say they were running Mobile 1 ???? I have been running Rotella 15-30 and the big PS filter, but only running rotella cus I was told it was for diesel engines... I run Mobile 1 in my gassers
Oil is the blood of the engine keeping that clean is paramount. I have been using Amsoil for several years now and would not go back to standard oil unless it was in something ready to fly apart. In my 1988 F-350 4x4 7.3L I am using the dual remote filter system from Amsoil with the largest filters available and an oil cooler which is got me up to 14 quarts. The 1st filter is full flow filter to 10 microns while the 2nd and much larger filter (2 quart) filters 1 qt every 45 seconds down to 1 micron. This truck does the towing and grunt work so it needs all the help it can get. It is not pulling the machines Dave Sponaugle does but it works pretty hard none the less. I used the Delvac 1 and that is good oil but switched to Amsoil because it is one stop shopping gets sent to your house and you just put it in. I have about 6,000 miles on this current change the oil looks like I might have 300 miles on it. The 2nd filter has the ability to reduce acid and remove moisture. Will change the full flow at 10,000 and my oil test has had 2 thumbs up so far. They say to change it once a year or every 25,000 probably wont go that far but hey see what the oil test says . Don't mind spending money just a nice test with good results so far. The old girl has 174,877 as of today. Long live the IDI's!
