Oil level
Newbie to the group.
I have read a couple of threads where users recommend a 13.5 quart oil level.
What is with that? Owners manual calls for 15.5 quarts.
I also read over filling oil can cause poor injector performance.
Can some one who know explain this to me.
Thanks,
Troy

The confusion is casued by the following....
1) The system holds 15 qts capacity
2) After draining, .5 - 1 quart remains in the high pressure oil system (fires the injectors).
3) So, if completely drained, one only gets out around 14 quarts (give or take)??
4) If someone does not follow the oil drain procedures correctly, then 1 qt may be left in the pan. This is due to needing to first loosen the oil filter cap (drains 1 qt down into pan) then drain the pan. Re-install the oil filter and cap and re-install the drian plug (after completely draining). If someone drains first, then opens the filter cap, then 1 qt of dirty oil stays in the pan/system... could casue over-filling.. let alone having 1 qt of dirty oil in there!!
I warm my motor up for 20+ minutes by driving it (warm oil flows and drains better than cold oil and does not stick to vertical surfaces).
I let it drain for a good 20 - 30 minutes to ensure I get out as much as I can.
I use only Racor made (Fram, Racor or Motorcraft oil filters) - Only ones that are OEM spec'd!!!
I re-fill with 14 qts... start motor... and top off as needed.
I have never had a "romping" problem and always seem to get about 14.5 qts back in my motor... but others find that their dipstick is slightly off and they have to compensate for that and/or really measure what they pour in.
But to answer your question... this is why and how this issue is discussed.
