I got an 07 FX2 scab with a cat back exhaust and chrome tips exiting out the back of the truck. My question is the condensation and moisture collects into a small pool of water inside my tail pipes. After this water dries it turns to rust and the rust is visable inside the tips. Small problem I suspect, but it does annoy me and kinda takes from my new truck.
What can I do to fix this short of drilling a small drain hole on the bottom of the chrome tips to effect drainage? Anyone else have this problem?
i would just go ahead and drill a small hole at the bottom. i bought a magnaflow dual exhaust for my 02 and i was going to do that, but there were already holes drilled in the tips.
Magnaflow drills small holes in their tips for the same reason, but all of their tips are stainless anyway. Drilling a hole in a chrome tip may promote the growth of rust around the hole. If it was my own truck, I would drill a drain hole in the tip, and if rust started to become an issue, just swap it out for a stainless tip
Thanks guys, looking at a few trucks I have learned that 99% of them do in fact have small drain holes drilled in them. I have since just now in fact drilled two small holes in the tips. You are right if rust becomes an issue, I'll just have them cut off and get some stainless steel ones. I should have checked before I had them put on, but who woud have thought.......
Yeah most exhaust places use chrome tips unless you request otherwise. They are much cheaper, and actually a little "brighter" than stainless tips, but you do have the rust issue. What i have done in the past was to get some black rustoleum and paint inside the tips, to cover the existing rust and prevent any more from forming. You may want to do the same, esp around the holes you drilled, and they may just last the life of your truck.
