Replacing Alternator

I have a 97 F150 4.6 2wd and I need to replace the alternator...

I've read in a few places that the intake needs to be removed to replace the alternator... is this true or not? For a quick glance it does not look like that is the case but I would like to know for sure before I start removing parts?

Anyone know

No absolutely not. You shouldn't have to touch the intake manifild at all. If you replacement alternator comes with a replacement end for you're wireing harness, it is a good idea to replace it. Some alternators had issues with the factory plug end of the harness.

Ok, Thanks for the info! A quick glance I didnt see any reason the intake needed to come off. But I wanted to be sure. That is a big relief to know

I would go with a local auto-electric rebuild of your existing alternator (assuming it is the factory one). I have had terrible luck with the typical auto parts store rebuild or remanufactured units. When my 1999 F-150 alternator required servicing after 125,000 miles, I went to a local rebuilder and took a quality exchange unit for about $125 with a 1 year warranty.

I'm with Jim. I went thru 3 alternators before I got a good one. Next time I'll do a local rebuild or new. On the good side, I got to where I could swap out an alternator in about 30 min. You don't need to remove the intake. Good luck.

I'ma fan of the "new".
Replaced more re-manufactured alternators than I want to be able to count.
