I was wondering this Question:In reading old posts here i summised that the trans temp on a torqshift is about 140-170 during normal travel. As far as i know the water temp sits between 190 and 210 during normal operation. Why then does ford route the trans line into the sides of the radiator?..Am i makin sense or am i just talkin nonsense .Thanks
Thats where the cooler is, it is a oil to water cooler. The temps will even out and the cooling is better then you think, still stock you will never see over 220-230 on a 5r100
I think the radiator helps heat up the trans fluid on cold days. My coolant rises to 188 in a few minutes but the trans temp takes much longer to get to 160, where it stays most of the time. As CSIPSD said, the trans cooler does a great job, no need for any aftermarket unit.
high water temp is my concern due to plowing. On my last truck it would overheat and that would cause the trans to over heat and killed it.The problem is i have to travel 40 miles to plow out my bussiness and thats where i get into trouble.Though my last truck was a 91 explorer.Probably the last thing when they designed it was "how would it handle with 700 lbs on the front blockin all the air to the radiator". Im hopin that this truck now is built a little tougher and able to handle a little more .On a side note that little explorer pulled out more chevys and dodges stuck in ditches while plowing than i could ever count.pretty funny huh?...
The transmission cooler is in the cold side of the radiator. The engine coolant has already been cooled by the radiator before it gets to the transmission cooler. The coolant, having left the engine at about 200°F, is now between about 180°F and 0°F, depending on how warm the air temp is, and how hard the engine is working.
Actually that depends on if it's equipped with the snow plow prep package. There is a TSB on this, if you do not have the package Ford suggests that you replace the fan clutch with the plow prep clutch to prevent overheating on the 6.0L.
