I have converted my '91 F150 4.9L from E4OD trans to ZF 5-speed. Do I need to change out the ECU? I thought I read here that you did not need to unless you cannot stand getting a code indicating trans failure. However, my admittedly preliminary observations indicate that MPG has actually gone down, which is suprising. Also the engine revs to a bit over 2K rpm when first started, hot or cold, then comes down to idle. Could my auto trans ECU be at fault for either of these conditions? I was expecting MPG to up or at least stay the same. If I do need to change it, what years can I use?
I don't know about your mpg/idle issues but here is a link to a list of id codes for computers along with the engine/trans and vehicle they come from. The truck computers are about 3/4's of the way down the list.
i would see what the ecu is putting out. your mpg drop could be a combo of things. its colder out as well so more fuel will be used also relearning to drive efficently with a stick may affect mpg at first.
The problem with that list on fordfuelinjection is that it is woefully incomplete. Every ECU I have looked at on eBay is not on that list. Neither is the one I have sitting at home from a parts truck where I know what it is for. Anybody know of a more complete listing?
I agree the mpg thing needs more time to be sure. But I was hoping my mpg would be going up a bit in the end and therefore would be roughly the same initially. Now it seems I may be lucky to just get back where I was, which is a suprise. Time will tell.
But I thought I would ask now and if the consensus is that I should change the ECU, then I will do it right away and the mpg can just be whatever it is.
