how big is my lift?

Hi i have a 1978 f150 4x4 and i want to make sure the lift that i have is 6inches, that is what the man who sold me the truck said it had. i am getting new shocks and i need to make sure i get the right ones. How do i find out what lift is on it? i want to take measurements, not just look at the old shocks because the shocks could be the wrong ones. Thank you

You should be able to take a static measurement of the shock mounts, (a measurement of the truck's shock mounts with the truck on level ground), and select a shock from there. The proper way to select a shock, is to cycle the suspension travel, from full extension, to full compression, and select a shock that will fit. All manufacturers provide extension lengths, and compressed lengths to help with selection.
