i have a 92 f150 4X4 6 inch lift and 35's with 4.10 gears with a 302 and a built AOD trans.. i am wanting to build my 302 as much as i can and i dont mind spending money. i want to get all of the horsepower and torque i can get out of it. whts the best way to build this motor without putting a stroker kit in it? i also want to keep it fuel injected.. which injectors would i need? which heads? cam? do i convert to mass air? etc. everyones response is greatly appreciated..
a 5.8 swap would be a better route to take in my opinnion. would allow you to stay efi and actually reuse the efi harness that is currently attatched to your 5.0.
also going to either a 4.56 or 4.88 gears would help as well.
to your pm, i am not sure what your friend is dealing with. a 5.8 swap from a 302 is as simple as replacing the 5.0 you have.
if your mileage is low on the 5.0 look into some headers, offroad bassani Y pipe and run 3" exhaust out stock location. upgrading to 4.56 gears would put you about right with those tires, 4.88 would be even better since the 302 likes hi rpms just remember you have to swap both front/rear at same time or not use 4wd.
give the motor a good tune up, run basic copper autolite or motorcraft plugs, 9mm ford wires (routed properly) and bump timing to 12*btdc with spout connector removed.
i have hedman elite long tube headers and one chamber flowmasters with no pipeing after the mufflers but i asked my friend today and he is useing a older style 351 block and he was having to relocate the dipstick i believe but im thinking of going ahead and doing the 5.8 swap so wht do u think would be the best year model to get one out of and the computer system Kemicalburns? and thanks for all your help

this is what i did. I located a complete wrecking yard efi 5.8 with low miles and good oil pressure. this made the swap practicly a drop in. I reused my 5.0 engine harness, motor mounts, and front accessories (ac/powersteering/alt/smog pump). If you locate a 5.8 out of a 88-92 bronco,f150,f250,f350 you will have nothing else needed besides the proper computer. Now the big question here is you say you have an AOD, I would think your truck would have the e4od. these two trannies are completly different and is important to positivly id which one you have.
If in fact you have an AOD you will need a flexplate from an 80's crownvictoria running the 5.8/aod combo. any parts store can get this for about $60.
If you have the E4od then finding the proper flexplate will be easy because this was a common combo.
Again if you have the AOD you will need an ecu for a 5.8/C6 or manual setup.
if you have the e4od then that computer is common once again.
if you locate a 93+ 5.8 there will be a few differences on some of the parts but this is also a better block. if you find this (mine was a 95) i can tell ya what else might need changed, which isnt much.
my superford page has pics as well , i did my swap in a 2 weekend time frame by myself.
If you don't want to swap engines, then install a set of TFS twisted wedge heads and a better cam. The 302 could make about 370 lb-ft of tourqe and 360 HP. With those big fat tires you may actually need more gear to get it into it's power band though.
i do have the AOD and i just got it built at the beginning of december of 2006 and i also have the crappy push button 4x4 lol but your help is making my life way easier as to finding out how to actually get my truck done right thanks
putting those heads and cam in a 302 would cost 1200-1500 doing the work yourself. installing a good 5.8 and installing a cam, running headers and good exhaust will get you to the same hp/trq.
