I posted a while ago about noises in the front end and people suggested shocks as I have already fixed the balljoints, wheel bearings, radius arm bushings and some thing else I can't think of right now. Well today I just replaced the front shocks hoping it was the problem but it wasn't still have the noise mainly when pulling in to a parking spot or backing out of the drive way. Some times it seems like it is coming from one side or the other and other times it sounds like it is from both sides. Oh by the way it is a 1996 f-150 4X4. any other thoughts. I have already seen the article on the cross member and that might be it, I started to take out the crossmember one day to fix an exhuast leak then realized I didn't have to, so I tightened it back up but that was about 6-7 months ago and have only had the noise for maybe a month. thanks in advance for any help.
Hi,
My truck also has some funny sounds coming from it too. It's a 96' 150 4x4 with 109k on it. Recently though it's been making a whistling noise in the front end and it also making a lot of front end noise when driving that I have never had before. The whistling noise in the front end will stop when I come to a complete stop. What could that be?
I also have a binding sound occassionally when braking. What could be the cause of this? Thanks for any advice.
I have very similar sounds. Have also replaced most front end, radius arm bushings and brackets, shocks, etc. I was starting to think maybe body mounts - not sure. Not really sure how to check them.
Went down the same road, first radius arm bushings, then pivot arm bushings, finally shocks. All were pretty well worn, so it was a combination of things. All fixed now.
Silversport,
No I haven't changed pivot bushings or radius arm bushing. What is the pivot bushings? I know what the radius arm bushing are but not the pivot. What could the whistling and excessive front end noise be? Wheel bearings? I never done them on a 4x4 truck. Is it really hard or fairly easy?
Pivot Bushings are the bushings at the ends of the axle halfs in the center of the truck. I have never done front bearings on a 4WD so hopefully someone else can answer that one for you.

You just described the classic crossmember noise. Please try the fix before doing anything else. With a floor jack, and an impact it took me 15 minutes, and fixed it totally. Not sort of or most of the time, but totally gone.
Here is the link for anyone not familar with this common problem.
Good luck Frank

Thanks Frank -- going to give it a shot tonight maybe. I have tightened all those bolts and eliminated them off my list of suspects -- but looks like I may have been wrong.
Do you hear it like when you hit bumps and when your breaking? I am just taking a stab hear but on some vehicles its the springs. The isolaters may be worn causing the spring to rub and make the noise.
Wormshoe did a great writeup on doing the raduis and pivot bushings in this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ackle-pop.html .... funny the thread is called the same thing as the link that Frank posted.
Well -- I tackled the x-member tonight. I actually didn't even touch the upper frame bolts (besides being near impossible to get at, I didn't see how they could possibly bind). So I loosened the lower frame rail to x-member and lower gusset to x-member bolts along with the tranny mount. Followed procedure in link - retightened, and no more noise like I had before!
Bad news is that I discovered a new noise now (ok, it was probably there but I couldn't tell the difference). It appears to be coming from the rear shackle on the driver's side when the spring starts to compress. Guess I get to learn about that now. Any links for that???
have you checked to see if you still have rubber insolators on your springs? this will make a creaking noise if not just drop your coil springs down and rig up some intertube around the top and bottom and it should go away and for the body mounts just use hockey pucks and drill a hole in the middle of them, it is the same material as the body lift stuff and works great i have them on my 02 trailblazer with out a problem
