I think I'll be heading out to the ol wrecking yard in the next couple of days to look for something we need. I hate to go too soon as I kinda like to let inventory move around a little before heading out there, but then again, I would hate to miss something.
I'll post up anything I find out.

Whatever it takes for the cause Miguel, whatever it takes. Well, anything within reason I should say...

I actually like going to picknpull to look around at all the stuff for my old truck. But I have to stay away or I'll spend too much money and the wife would kick my arss. It's kinda like going to Costco. You have to exercise great restraint.
This project is just a good excuse for me to brouse around in guys world. Justification to the boss ya know.

Okay, just home from the wrecking yard. Couldn't make it yesterday, had to work late. Anyway, here's what I found:

Both of the '77 F250s he has have disk brake solid axle front ends under them. It was way too muddy for me to get up close and personal enough to get gear ratios off of them, I'll do that in the near future. Both axles appear to be open-knuckle Dana 44s, but one seems to be a little beefier-looking than the other, having the bigger locking hubs and wider spacing between the upper and lower ball joints. We can have either one for 200 bucks so I told him we'd probably take one and I'll pull it on Sat. the 13th...unless I'm able to get to it this Sat. instead, I'm just not sure yet.

I'd like to get the beefier-looking one, especially if it's a 4.10 to match Tim's rear end. If neither of them are 4.10s then I'd for sure get the beef unit and then we'd have to scrounge some 4.10 gears...and there's an additional cost there.

If this sounds okay with everyone then we're good to go and I'll cover the cost. If not, it won't be any problem to back out. Let me know...

There is a set of 4.10 gears for $50 on craig's list -

I like the idea of buying a local axle - the big question is where the input shaft is located - if it is above the axle it is what is called a hi-pinion case, lower is a low-pin case. Hi-pinions are more desireable as they have a less steep angle on the driveshaft, as well as a different way to keep the gears oiled.

Even choice, I would go with the hi-pinion, but for this price I would take either.

Front axle update:

I just got back from the wrecking yard again. We (or at least I at this point) now own an open-knuckle high-pinion Dana 44 disk brake front axle with 4.09 gears. I paid him for it and got started on pulling it but they close early on Sat. and my impact decided to go south on me so I'll finish it up either one day this coming week after work or next Sat.

I'm also getting the leaf springs and hangers and all associated hardware as well as the shock towers so that it won't really be too bad to mount it all up in our truck.

Hope this meets with everyone's approval...

Oh, I can put it somewhere...but decorum and the forum guidelines prohibit me from suggesting exactly where...

Oh no, not grumpy at all...hence the !

Well, no more grumpy than usual anyway. I gotta tell ya though, this wrecking yard is the worst mudhole I've ever seen. I had to buy a pair of knee-length rubber boots just to wear when I go in there in the winter.

Maybe we can get him to let us hold mud drags there...

Unless you are not ready for it I will try to towbar the truck up to you on Saturday, and stick around to help on Sunday. I will use the van and stay in a campground.

I strongly suggest you and Mike get the money right - I know neither one of you are in a hurry, but many of us (including me!) are on a fixed budget and need to plan expenses. Mike is the treasurer, and should let us know what we owe, to date.

Things are looking great!!!!!!

Clint

Absolutely! But it will need complete brakes bearings and drums. The gears are the stock ford Lim Slip 4.10. Please take them so I don't have to contribute to the ever climbing heep of scrap going to the crusher.
The only thing this rear end is doing now is acting as an anchor to tie down the tarp covering my rv. But I can do without it in a heartbeat. Please take it!

That's going to be some serious drive to pick things up at Tims, and deliver to Dans, then head home.

Well have to figure out something.
