Tim, if I recall correctly there were some front ends around there close, just up the hill. I wasn't looking very hard but I know I saw a couple more 250's in there.
If ya need help on some axle pulling, let me know I'd be willing to come over again to stand around, er, help. And I still need to find a rear shaft for my '88 4x, and price out a set of exploder axles.
Hey thanks Rich. I'll get out there soon to check.
And I'll let you know if I see something.
I managed to get today (Jan 1 ) off. Can you believe that? Just got home, whoo hooo!
Patrick, thanks for setting me straight...I guess I was suffering from a brain fart when I posted that. I have the rearend out of an '85 and that's one I was thinking of as being too wide, as I had taken some measurements with an eye towards swapping it into my '68 in order to take advantage of the higher gearing. I was aware of the wider springs on the late '70s trucks, and I do have the wider springs from the '85 though I don't know if they would be any advantage over the '76 springs, if Tim has them too.
Oh yeah, I also have front springs for that same 76. I might have the rears too. Don't remember. I'll have to dig through the mess in the garage a little to see if I can see part of it at the bottom of the pile. Ha ha, LOL. That's gonna be quite the job come spring, cleaning that mess...
I think I'll leave the 3.73s in there for now and when I swap the diesel in I'll also install my Gear Vendors O/D unit...although, with the diesel I may still want the higher gearing.
So we want tall gears for mud bogging? Excuse my ignorance but I woulda assumed low gears would be what you'd want for grunt under load.
Someone edumicate me.
No, we want relatively low gears...you said your rear end has 4.10s, I think those or even 4.56s would be good. I probably confused the issue by going off-topic and blathering on about my own truck...sorry, you can have me shot later!
You say you want a shot? A little snort of Patron Silver Tequilla straight out of the freezer maybe?
Mmmm, I just made myself thirsty. I don't like tequilla straight so much but that freezing temp Patron... Mmmmm

We want perfromance - 0 to 60 MPH. Tall/short terms are confusing, as is low and high. We want to turn a 33 inch tire, so a 4.10 or a 4.56 rear should give us perfromance.
Don't forget we have a transfercase that is either 2 to 1 or 2.5 to 1 reduction in low range if we need low end grunt.
I am no expert, mostly I am echoing what I read on the 4X4 forum - so I hope someone will speak up if I am wrong.

Your NP205 actually has less than 2.0:1 low range, more like 1.85 or 1.97 (can't remember for sure)
So a lower gear is a must, a common ratio that will work is going to be 4.10:1 less likely to find but more worthy would be the 4.56:1, but do not be afraid of running a 4.88:1 if you come accrossed a set for elcheapo,
A for the front diff, a dana 60 front would be best, but finding one for under $1K is tough, a disk brake open knuckle 44 is you next best bet, preferably from a 77.5 to 79 f-250, the are the high pinion "reverse cut" gears, (they do not require a reverse turning driveline) however they are stronger in the ring & pinion department, not to mention when (note I said when) you brake a front axle shaft or u-joint it is easier to remove the shaft on an open knuckle front diff, on the closed knuckle front brake desighn you have to remove the entire outer knuckle to replace the axle,

Me & the wife actually had some of that last nite. A few too many shots though.

Oh really? I see I have someone to sip a little Patron with at our chapter campout this summer. My wife can sip a few of those too.
Best if stored in the freezer. Smooooooth sippin. Of course, your suppose to sip it. Just about anything can be good in moderation. Anything can hurt in excess.
Sure is good when camping on the beach, sitting in a sand chair, playin' guitar and listening to the waves break on a warm summers eve.
