I've been trying to figure out where my wind leak is. It sounds like a baseball sized hole behind the dash at highway speeds. I've looked inside and out and all the firewall thru-holes look to be properly sealed (speedo, steering column, wires, pedal rods, etc). Maybe something with the heater system ? I looked in the cowl and all looks fine there.
I suppose you've ruled out other things that might sound like a whistling wind noise...like bearing noise?
Also, it may depend what you're comparing the ol' truck to. These weren't ever "quiet", as aerodynamics in 1966 were something for just for airplanes. Did this noise recently start...or has it always been there?
I was just thinking that when I open one of the fresh air doors (larger hole that you suggested) I don't recall much sound change with the big rush of air.
Bill might be on to something, you could be hearing something mechanical.
LOL, did you check the top of the cab just under the drip lip? (On the outside) I had a big wind whistle from there as it had rusted out. Filled the gap with some stuff I got from an auto body paint supply store that was made for sealing between body panels. No more whistle...
To find your wind noise get a driver and other person and a piece of 5/8 heater hose about 3'long. Drive down the road until you hear the noise, then take the hose and put one end to your ear and the other end to go around doors windows, etc when you come across the noise you can pin it.
down.
You also could have a hole rusted thru the inner cowl just below the windsheild corners. I think this area is only visible if you look thru the upper door hinge mounting hole in the jam. Don't ask me why I know this....
Thanks for the ideas guys. She's up on stands right now getting some brake work done and hiding from the Michigan salt. Alot of your ideas I can check in the garage this weekend. I like the heater hose idea as well - will save that for spring or a dry day. When I figure it out, I'll post it.
