Well I'm messin around with ideas to supe up my 56. Currently it has a stock 79 302 and a C4 pushing it. When I take it on the freeway it sounds like it's goin in pretty high rpms but I'm not sure since the 56 doesn't have a tach. Does anyone know the freeway revs for this kind of setup? Anyway, I'm planning on building up a 351 with some extra power and bolting that up to the C4, as well as getting a rear end with 3.00 gears instead of the 3.73s it's running now. Would this new setup lower RPMs on the freeway? Thanks for putting up with all my stupid questions, still learnin.
You will lose power going with the 3.00 gears. If it was me I would go with a 4 speed automatic. Your probably turning about 2800-3000 RPM's with the C4 versus 1800 at 65 MPH with the overdrive trans. Just my nickel's worth.
If you want a play toy, local run-around truck, leave the 3.73's.
If you are going on long trips-shows, I would put the 3.00's in. I personally like the simplicity, reliability, and availibility of the c4. You will have lock-up torque convertor and throttle cable hassles and check around as to how much it costs to rebuild an overdrive trans. If none of this matters, the overdrive is nice, but too much hassle for me.
