1966 radiator core support ..again...

I have done a search and have read about everthing you could on the 1966 core supports or lack of good supports on this board. From reading it appears that you can buy a 1964 support and attach the inner fender angle, drill a few holes in the right spots and your good to go.

Has anyone done one of these mods recently? if you have what did you do. My bottom 2 inches including the doubler supports are shot Also do you have to add the exact type of doubler supports on the bottom? Man, this is holding back my project big time. My skill set and tool set are somewhat limited for the bigger projects. I have someone that will install cab mounts and floor pans the rest of it I have tackled myself. The exception being this dang support. Don't know about you guys but in my neck of the woods (N.W. Arkansas) even 1966 long beds are a rare sighting. Just a few years ago they were a dime a dozen...go figure. Any input would greatly be appreciated. thx

The 61-64 support is being reproduced for sure. It seems that I recall the 65-66 was being made recently as well, but the source escapes me. Maybe NPD (National Parts Depot?).

You need some metal skill to mod a 64 to accept the 65/66 inner fenders. Can be done though, if needed.

dadstruck,

LMCTruck has a radiator support listed for 289.95 that with a little modification works great! I know, I've done it.

First, remove the unneeded radiator supports from the new mount. I know, seems wrong to cut up a brand new support but you don't need them. Next, create a template for locating the inner fender brackets on your new support using your old one as a guide. Remove the squared off inner fender supports from your old mount and weld or bolt them to the new one using the template you made. Using your radiator as a guide, drill four new holes to mount the radiator to the support. You will also need to drill various holes to mount the voltage regulator, for wire ties, etc. Very simple and effective.

I've included some picks in the link below, if you have any questions feel free to email me.

Hope this helps!!

Thumbs up No salt = no rust.

Y'all would have seizures if you hit a few wrecking yards in CA. I have never seen a Slick with a rusty core support or hood. A bit of surface rust in the roof seams, a bit on the right side floorboards...and some minor rust in the fenders.

That's about it.

One more thing dadstruck! If you are like me and have the entire front end of the truck tore apart, make sure you loose fit the inner fenders to the fire wall BEFORE you install the modified radiator mount. I did it the other way and like to never got the inner fenders installed.

chadwickma,
Thx a million for the pictures that helps alot!! Do you remember what year you ordered from lmc and have you done a trial fit with inner and outer fenders attached? Any alignment issues?

Hats off to all you foks on this board. During this restore process you have answered alot of questions. My goal is to return the favor once I gain enough knowledge with these trucks. As you have, I plan on passing along the knowledge I learned during the restoration of this thing. Hopefully we can keep these old trucks rolling.

thx!!!!

dadstruck,

The LMC catalog lists it as a 66 4X4. It's listed on page 23 of the catalog and you will need the rubber mounts on page 22. No problems with allignment, everything else lined up perfectly. I'll take some more pictures her in a bit and upload them.
