I recently read an article in MotorAge magazine about carrier and axle bearings going bad in later Explorers and Expeditions. Apperently part of the problem is crap bearings and the other was traced to bad grounds. This even affects the independent rears. I was a little skeptical about this until we had two 00 Explorers this week with rearend noise. Took them apart and sure enough the bearings and races looked like someone had sandblasted them with breaker rock. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this or is having noise currently?
Did you check your axle seals to make sure that wwere not or had not been leaking?? I recently replaced them on mine - 96 Explorer Sport, 4WD, 5 spd, 165K miles.
Freesplorer, I second that. Seriously though, we put the reaerend back together today and it still makes noise so I guess that we are going to have to replace the axle bearings even though they looked good, guess that the guy at work that took it apart should have listened and ordered axle bearings to begin with. I always thought that Ford built bullet proof rearends. I hope this is a few and far between situation.
I have just started hearing noises that sound like bad bearings in my wifes 04. Now i believe they are bad. It's only got 40,000 miles on it if you look at the TSB'S there are alot of them covering the later Explorers
I've been thinking about picking up a Ford warranty because of the rear end issues along with anything else that can and will go wrong.
Plenty of people are having rear issues.
My brother has a problem with his '03.
38K miles and out of warranty.
Can get the top of the line Ford warranty 7/100 for $1170 for the 4X4..
I'm seriously thinking about it.
I still have till August to decide on my '05.

Man, that's a great price! I bought my '96 in 1998, and got a Ford 3 year/36,000 mile service contract for $1100. It paid for itself, as the trans had to be rebuilt with less than 1000 miles remaining on the contract. There were a few other things, nothing major, that I could have done myself had I not purchased the contract. If I could buy another one, I would - but since the truck is 11 years old and has 132K, that's not possible.
For $1170.00 you could buy a half dozen complete rear ends from the junk yard. I have a 96 with 160K miles on it and no problems whatsoever with the rear end. I did recently have to replace the axle seals but the vehicle is 10 years old with some milage.
If it were me, I think I'd pull one at the local bone yard from an Explorer or Ranger that pre-dates the problem and swap it out instead of fishing around for a solution on the currrent one. Something to contemplate anyway.
I'm really surprised to hear about this since I'd always thought the 8.8 inch rear end was prety solid. Hot rodders use them quite a bit now as the old 9" rears are becoming a bit tougher to find in the desired widths.

Yep, my '96 also had its axle seals replaced, and its rear end has never had any problems. But since other things can go wrong - such as the transmission, in my case - $1170 buys fairly cheap insurance. More so if one isn't capable or comfortable doing major work on their vehicle.
I had my 04 expdition go in 4 times untill they finally fixed the humming sound in my rear end. they replaced the ring and pinion everytime and the fourth time they got it adjusted just right. kinda sucked but on the bright side i got to try out some other ford vehicles that they rented to me!

True.
There's plenty of things that can go wrong in the remaining 4 years and 64K miles after the regular warranty.
I don't know if there's a sponsor on this forum that sells Ford warranties as cheap as this guy Troy at Toyota of Geenfield in Massachusetts.
I bought a top of the line Toyota Platimum 7yr /100K warranty for my '07 loaded XLE Camry for $880.Toyota dealer wanted $1595 and $1400 after haggling..
He told me he can sell me a Ford Warranty for my '05 for $1170.
I guess Toyota of Greenfield must be part of an auto group that sells many brands.
Update:
Actually it's the same guy that is a sponsor here.
A fighter pilot told me that after his computer went out and before rebooting at 30000 feet that the engines flamed out. He was able to restart and land safely. But he said something that has suck with me every sense. "The only thing that was going through my mind was that this aircraft was built by the lowest bidder." Auto manufacturers are no different in my opinion. JMO
