Hi
I will be installng some hella 500 fog lights, on my 2001 ford f350 diesel truck. The instructions state that i need to tie in to my high beams. Just wondering what color wire i need to look for?
I would not do that, use a relay and power them from the battery cable at the starter relay.
I would use a switch to control the relay and fuse it all.
If you run them off the headlight switch you will more than likely open some fuses and shorten the life of the headlight switch.
Being Hella is a good name, I would assume that this kit has a relay to power the lights, and all you need is a power source for the switch that controls the relay. That being said, I have another concern, are the lights really "fog" beam? Or are they "driving" beam? Fog lights are only legal with low beams, and driving are only legal with high beams (at least here in PA anyway). Give us some more info, so we can get you hooked up the right way. You can also add a DPDT switch to give you legal or standalone, thats how my driving lights are wired. A little more info and we'll get you on track.
Thank you for the replies. These lights are driving lights that will attach to a light push bar. Yes this is a complete kit wires, relay, switch, etcc. I also would like to attach some fog lights too in the future.. so my setup would be driving light foglight foglight driving light. what is a dpdt switch??? any advice or diagrams would be helpful thank you
The DPDT switch is a double pole, double throw switch. It has 3 positions, on, off, on. I used one on mine so that I can have the driving lights on with parking lights, or only with high beams (legal way). You could also make them standalone depending on where you get power for the aux light switch. I used a wire that is only hot when lights are on. I have yet to wire them for high only, so I just set the switch to off for inspection, that way they do not power up. Using the dpdt switch to your advantage is simple, find a power source that you would like to power your lights, run to one side of DPDT switch, and then run wire from center of DPDT switch to the power wire for your hella switch. Then you have the other terminal, which you can connect to a power source only powered when the highs are on. Then all your need to do is flip the switch for high only, standalone or off. Blowing fuses won't be an issue if everything is hooked up right, as your only pulling a small amount of current to close the relay. What I can't tell you is what wires you need to find, as I don't have a superduty. Maybe try the superduty forum if nobody in this one can answer that.
Since you have driving lights, you will want to tie into the highbeam circuit. An easy place to get this is from the fuse box. The highbeam circuit leaves the high/lowbeam switch in the steering column on a grey/orange wire. It goes to a 15 amp fuse in the fuse box under the dash, fuse number 16 I believe.
You can buy a fuse tap and tap into the fuse in the box, and then run to your driving light switch. Then from your switch you can run out through the firewall to the relay that came with the light kit. The kit should have a diagram on how to hook up the wiring under the hood.
