Post the numbers from the VIN plate on this site and they will be decoded for you. This will let you know what was original.

Welcome to the board! That is a great looking truck!

I think I would start with some basic diagnostics to find out the cause of the smoke before I tore it all apart. I would definately keep the six, its a great engine and willmake that a sweet truck

Good luck with it

Sounds like a bad connection. Make sure the battery cables are clean and tight, heck, make sure all the connections are clean and tight. Check the grounds also.

You're almost there

Could also be that the starter is either frozen or shorted out, draining the battery down. you don't actually need an ignition switch to start and drive the truck if the starter is good. All you need is a length of hookup wire (~16 ga will do) long enough to go from the battery to the coil with an aligator clip on each end and a screwdriver. Clip one end of the wire on the + battery terminal and the other end on the terminal of the coil that does NOT connect to the distributor. use the screwdriver to short out between the heavy terminal on the starter solenoid that connects to the battery and the small terminal on the same end. That should spark and turn the starter over. If/as soon as the engine starts remove the screwdriver. The engine should continue to run until you disconnect the jumper wire to shut it off. With an engine that has set a while it is better to try to start it by jumping the battery with another vehicle with the other vehicle running at 1000- 1500 RPMs (fast idle) The other vehicle's alternator can produce the heavy amperage a starter requires much easier than just a battery can and won't run down. It takes a lot less power to make a solenoid click than to turn a starter motor.
Then there is the final option if it is a standard transmission of tow starting it. If you only need to move it a 1/2 mile, why not just tow it where it needs to go then get it running. If you or anyone you know doesn't know how to flat tow, calling a tow truck shouldn't be outrageously expensive for a 1/2 mile if it's based nearby.

Ok got the truck to turn over (loose connection on the ignition switch) but it would not start so i am just going to have to tow it. The reason i have not towed it so far is that i was not sure if the brakes worked but they do seem to work and i am having a hard time finding someone to help me tow it. I just need to get it to my garage so i start the process of restoring this old truck to make it a good around town vehicle.

Cool, glad you found the problem with the starting system. Shame it didn't start...its always something.

Have patience, you'll get it there

Your pictures show the truck sitting in snow. Have you tried removing the air cleaner to first make sure the choke is closing, then holding it open and shooting a shot of starting ether into the carb then try starting it? I suspect that the carb and fuel pump are dry and you need it to at least run for a few seconds to draw fuel thru the system again. Don't squirt ether or gas into the carb while turning the engine over, or the backfire could remove all the hair on your hands and head!

Chris,

Probably not. The only firing order I know of that goes in order 1,2,3,4,5,6 is the 2.8L GM V-6.

Look on the intake manifold. Firing orders are typically cast into the intakes somewhere. You can take the distributor cap off and bump the engine over to see which way (CW or CCW) the rotor is turning.

Good luck

My question is can you pull the transmission with the engine or do you have to disconnect the two seperatly?

Thanks,

chris
