The door tag on my 78 F-250 Camper Special shows the code for it having a D60 front end. I looked under there last night to take some measurements for some u-bolts, and I saw what appeared to me to be balljoints. I thought the D60s of this era used kingpins. I highly doubt a different front axle has been installed under this truck, but does this sound right?
Yea, it is most likely a Dana 60. I know the 75-76 used kingpins on 2wd. But I believe the 4x4s used ball joints. Does your truck have a Dana 60 rear end also?
It should have kingpins if it's a Dana 60. Ball joint 60's didn't come out until 93 or so.
The dana 60 fills the hub more than the 44 will. Here's a pic of the two - probably easiest to tell them apart this way.
