slave cylinder question
slave cylinder question
i put a new slave cylinder on my 84 f-150. now i can't get all the air out of the system, is there a bleeder valve i am overlooking? how do i get all the darn air outta this thing?
On my 84 its external theres just a bleeder on the slave cylinder. On the internal models (atleast the one i changed on a 96) the bleeder is behind a plastic cover thing on the drivers side of the transmission bell area.
I don't have a manual for your year a truck, mine only goes to 81. I do have a van manual that to 88. In it it states this about the external slave cylinder.
"The clutch hydrualic system is serviced as a complete assembly and is pre-filled and bled. Individual components are not available."
Not sure if this applies to your truck or not but if you don't have a bleeder valve then I would think it does.
Did the new slave cylinder have a plastic strap holding the rod in place? In the manual it gives instructions on how to install or damage could occur to the slave cylinder.
I'll check my manual for my truck and see what it says about trucks up to 81. Can't remember if it has anything in it or not

I checked my truck manual and it shows thru 84. It has the same info that the van manual had. The slave cylinder does not have a bleeder valve on it.
Is the firewall moving some while the clutch pedal is depressed? Seems like I read something on one of the forums about firewall flex causeing clutch problems?

Been there done that. Yes, the slave does have a bleed screw. It is the set screw that you found on the slave. Don't take it out, just open it and bleed it as is. Treat the hose and fittings like they are made of glass. I could not find a replacement for my 85 van and used the old one.
My floor needed reinforcment where the slave mounts. Works good now. I added some fine tune adjustment to the push rod. Cut the rod in two, threaded the ends and added one of those long nuts, about 2 inches long, added two jam nuts to hold things in adjustment. I have heard of pick im ups having the dash board flexing that need to be reinforced.
But you need to bleed the slave thru that set screw first. I hope you have found it by now.
