I just recently lost the trans in my 93 f150. It is slipping in all gears, but wants to move a little bit in all gears (not enough to drive it). Seams like the torque convertor is not putting out enough pressure or there is a pump problem Fluid is clean and so is the bottom of the pan (no cluch remnents) I have in the past had problems with blowing the fuse for the electronic shift control. Any Ideas?
It sound like your tranny needs to be removed and inspected BUT first make a pressure test.
You can perform also a Tranny mecanical test, it is supossed to diagnose if problem is located at tranny or some where else.
1º Trucks Off and cold
2º Get under truck, passanger side and locate the solenoid pack connector and disconnect it.
3º Start truck, let it get normal idle ( 620 - 670 RPM)
4º Move Manual lever to Reverse, transmision should shift hard but i can be drive in reverse normally.
5º Move Manual lever to 1 (Manual first) Transmision should shift to 2º gear hard, but it can be driven as usually, when truck reach 40 MPH move Manual lever to D, tranny should shift to 4º Gear, hard again at can be driven normally.
If tranny slip or doesn't shift at all, there are problem on it. This is the basic E4OD funtionally test.
This test may set Error codes, since computer can't reac the solenoid pack, be prepare to reset it if so.
thanks, I was going to do the pressure test in the AM when I could get my hands on a guage. You don't happen to know what the pressure should be do you?
The problem is in the torque converter. The hub on the turbine is revited on and the rivits sheer off.The truck will just creep with high rpm. This failer will happon quicking with no warning.
thanks, I did the pressure checks and here is the result. 30 PSI in park at Idle -180 psi in park at WOT. 300PSI in reverse at WOT 180 psi in 1st at WOT. No difference in slip with electric disconnected. Still sound like the Toque converter or pump?
Don't know if this effects the diagnosis, but the trans was out last year for a front main seal replacement when the truck started blowing fluid out when in reverse. I had replaced the seal and changed the fluid and filter. I did have the valve body out and started to disassemble the trans for a rebuild but bought the wrong kit. Since there was no particles on the magnet and everything looked clean I replaced the seal and left it at that. Could there be a leak at the valve body gasket causing this issue? I would hate to pull the whole trans to find out I needed a gasket. This is a 302 engine with 4 wheel drive---HEAVY
give us a call .we can help you out with any needed parts both stock and better then stock.
also when pulling that big heavy unit. remove the transfercase from the trans first then pull the unit. it will make your life a little easier, just as it dose out installers here at the shop. 100 plus or minus pounds off the trans is my point
What do i absolutely have to have in the way of tools besides the slide hammer? I was looking through a reference on the net and it had a long list of specialty tools needed. I'm not worried about taking it apart, but don't want to get stuck without the needed tools. The chunks I found look like they came from the driven part of the clutches Its a casting piece with external tabs as if it is driven by the clutches.
