I was rotating my tires today and noticed that the seal on the front axle was loose(area between the main axle housing and the yoke on the axle shaft). What is this seal for? I could not see any oil leaking. Looks like a major job to chage this seal. I guess the axle needs to be pulled out? anyone else have this problem? Thanks!
If it's a thin one, it's just a dust seal to keep crud out of your axle tubes and pumpkin... it should pop back in unless it rotted itself out. The best time to replace it would be when you're doing your ball joints, as that whole assembly would be apart.
I was just searching on exactly this and my 01 has the same issue. Both inner dust boots on the front axle are shot and there is a loose ring of the seal just flopping around. One of the outer seals are gone too. Problem is, the guy I bought the truck off had just replaced all the ball joints.... I will probably pick up the dust boots just to have but won't tear into them until I have absolutely nothing to do, or hear a clunking.
Any ideas on part numbers or cost for the dust boots?
Do a search on here for ball joint replacement by I believe Racerguy. There are pics and part numbers for the seal. If I remember correctly, there is a Napa and Carquest number for the dust seal.
FWIW: About a year or so after I bought my 04 F250, my front axle started leaking. I took it to the dealer and they re-sealed it. All better now. I think it's not a big deal, though.
Its not just a dust seal !
It also keeps the moisture out the back of the (wheel bearing unit.$300 ) If you wait long enough you'll be spending more in the long run.
If I understand correctly, it is also a vacuum seal for ESOF. I can't tell from your sig if you have the ESOF but if you do, that seal being loose may thrash your vacuum pump. I had just that happen on my '03. With that seal off, the vacuum pump ran all the time and destroyed itself.

No, that is not correct, the dust boot and the hub seal are different parts. The dust boot may protect and prolong the life of the hub seal, though.
