I have a 1995 F-150 with a 4.9y. I took it in to get alined today and the mechanic came out and told me the truck was garbage since the frame was cracked. He took me back and showed me a 3 inch crack on the inside of the fram rail below the end cross member. He told me i would be better off parking the rig but i couldnt do that. My boss tells me its possible to weld it and I know a guy that is amazing at welding and should have no problem patching this up. Will it be strong enough??? Will it pass inspection?? Is it safe to do this??? Please help!!
Id say yeah, weld it. If done properly the weld would be the strongest joint on your frame. Just make sure the guy knows what hes doing and gets the crack cleaned up right.
The entire left frame moves with the motion of the steering box since the crack is right behind it before the crossmember. Looks like ill have to gusset the cross member to the frame and remove the steering box so the frame can be all plated up.
There is no black art to it. Any competent welder can weld that. It just needs to be ground out so there is nice clean steel so the weld won't be contaminated. People think there is something special about a frame and that once it's cracked it's toast. Its just not true. It is just steel. It would take me five minutes to fix that crack. Good luck...
aslo if your truck does not have a sway bar, buy the cross memeber that goes across the mounts, its not much but helps from making this reoccur . pn for non lightining is f2tz.5c128.a
